"A sports car born from the roots of the Swedish welfare state. Volvo, light blue, B20 engine, and overdrive. It doesn't get much more Swedish than that. The fact that this is actually a really cool car has been understood abroad for a long time. Now even Swedish car enthusiasts are starting to wake up. We recommend a light inspection and regular service before the final check at the vehicle inspection. Then it's ready for summer meetings."

Description

The Swedish sold 1800ES was registered in the vehicle registry as early as December 12, 1971. This specimen was delivered in the attractive light blue Volvo color, with paint code 111, known in Volvo speak as Light blue metallic. According to information from the Swedish Transport Agency, the car has had 8 registered owners since new. The first owners are unknown. Between 1989 and 2004, the car was owned by a resident of Kalmar. The next owner of the car was an elderly gentleman living in Ankarsrum, Västervik municipality. In 2007, Sven-Olov Hägglund from northern Sweden was on a motorhome holiday in southern Sweden. He spotted the car and fell for it instantly. He managed to buy the 1800ES and drove it under its own power to his hometown of Örnsköldsvik. His wife drove the motorhome home, while Sven-Olov chose to travel in style in the Volvo. In 2011, the car was taken off the road due to health reasons, and in 2021, Sven-Olov passed away. The Volvo is now being sold by Bilweb Auctions on behalf of the heirs. The odometer reads 4830 km, which means the odometer recently 'rolled over' as it starts again at zero after 100 000 km. We don't know more about the mileage beyond that. The last inspection was done in 2010, so the Volvo needs a final check at the vehicle inspection. Once it is approved, it will be exempt from inspection according to vintage car regulations.

It started easily and the engine ran very smoothly. Not test-driven on the road, as it is currently off-road. A regular service and light inspection are recommended before the inspection.

  • Interior condition:

Nice interior, no specific remarks. See pictures.

  • Exterior condition:

Older, good repaint. There are some marks and scratches on the left side that occurred during storage in the garage. See the pictures. Normal fit of the body and panels. Possibly, a minor adjustment of the left door can be made. Bumpers and chrome trim in good condition.

  • General condition:

Beautiful and pleasant 1800 ES. An extra plus for being sold new in Sweden. The ownership history is partially known, and the rest can be researched through searches in the Swedish archives.

Facts about the model

Volvo P1800 ES (The sport wagon) is considered one of Volvo's most unique and unusually beautiful models. Today, it's a sought-after collector's car worldwide. The ES model (sports wagon) was only produced for two years, totaling 6000 units. When this model was introduced in 1972, nobody wanted to buy the old P1800 Coupe model anymore; everyone wanted the ES, which was perceived as more sporty and practical. Today, it's an icon in automotive history. Ahead of the 1974 crash safety requirements in the USA, Volvo chose to discontinue production. Therefore, the model was only built from 1972 to 1973. The P1800 was developed by the design firm Frua in Italy but was designed by the young Swedish designer, Pelle Petterson, between 1959 and 1960 when he was interning at Frua. This was kept secret for the first 20 years as Volvo desired Italian design, hence why Frua was hired.
