Technical data
Condition
-
Mechanical condition
The car is equipped with both power steering and power brakes — the latter likely retrofitted. The brakes feel very good, with excellent balance. The engine responds eagerly under acceleration and makes it clear that there is plenty of power available. It sounds great and runs well, perhaps idling slightly high.
An Edelbrock replacement carburetor is fitted, and the engine bay has received some cosmetic dressing-up with polished components, different valve covers, and similar upgrades. Whether any internal engine work has been carried out is unknown. The original radio remains installed, though its functionality is uncertain. -
Interior condition
Black interior with seats and door panels in good condition and free from damage. New carpeting has been installed, while the rest of the interior shows a degree of honest patina. The headliner sags slightly around the C-pillars but is otherwise without notable issues. There is some cracking and wear on the steering wheel. Overall, the cabin presents itself in a tidy and well-kept manner.
-
Exterior condition
Repainted in a near-original color at an unknown point in time. The paintwork presents well overall, though it is not entirely without flaws. Some dry spray/orange peel is visible along the lower edges, but nothing noticeable in the main sight lines.
The chrome is believed to be original and has survived in very fine condition, with only minor scuffs visible on a bumper or two. Trim and brightwork — here consisting of stainless steel, aluminum, and cast pieces — have picked up some scratches and small knocks over the years.
The body panels and fenders are straight and well-aligned. A small repair appears to have been carried out on one front fender, where a body support brace is also missing. The trunk compartment shows evidence of welding, as a large portion of the sheet metal there was replaced at some point. The trunk mat is missing.
The wheels and tires are in very fine, nearly flawless condition. The vinyl roof has been replaced recently. -
General condition
Attractive both inside and out, with everything presented in just the right kind of condition — genuinely user-friendly rather than over-restored. Mechanically, the car feels strong and healthy, and it delivers exactly the right V8 rumble when you put your foot down.

Facts about the model
Midway through the model year, the 500XL was introduced with a different roofline, alternately referred to as a Sports Hardtop or Fastback. The idea behind it was to make the large cars more competitive on NASCAR circuits by reducing aerodynamic drag and minimizing lift at high speeds. This variant was introduced as the 1963½ model year.
Engine options in the 500XL included the 352, 390, and 427 cubic-inch V8s — all belonging to Ford’s FE engine family.
