"Wild and beautiful — a stylish jewel that is quick and easy to launch and enjoy on the water. Great fun in classic and vintage boating circles."

Description

In the early 1950s, the Swedish Maritime Administration commissioned Livbåtsvarvet in Gothenburg to develop a more modern and improved standard for lifeboats. Representatives traveled to the United States to study fiberglass technology, which had recently begun to be used there. Lifeboats utilizing this technology soon entered production, and the method could also be applied to what were then called leisure boats.

The boat was built at Almags Varv on Orust and launched by Livbåtsvarvet Göteborg as the first sport motorboat manufactured in vacuum-molded, color-infused polyester. The auction boat is the only one of the ten boats produced in 1954 that still survives in original condition. Extensive documentation accompanies the boat, and the owner’s knowledge of its history is equally comprehensive. Any prospective buyer is strongly encouraged to read, listen, and learn from that knowledge.

A registered unbraked trailer from 2012 is also included. The registration number is listed above.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

The engine is a Johnson RDEL-16, 25 hp unit with electric start, pressure fuel tank, and controls — the very same specification the boat was delivered with in 1954. It features handsome industrial design, has been carefully restored, and repainted in its original color with new decals. It starts easily and produces a distinctive idle note; at higher revs it sounds more like a conventional older two-stroke outboard. The owner also notes that since the restoration, the engine has never let him down — and considering the correct maintenance and the fact that it has never been operated in salt water, its reliability remains genuinely impressive.

  • Interior condition

Paintwork, fittings, and every detail are finished to the highest standard — the owner’s attention to detail extends through every layer of the restoration. Vintage accessories are also included, such as period-correct life jackets.

  • Exterior condition

Glossy and beautiful hull in the important — and at the time revolutionary — fiberglass construction. The wooden superstructure radiates everything that makes classic wooden boats so appealing. Following the restoration, the hull was refinished inside and out, as well as the foredeck and side decks, in the original 2K color. Window frames and coamings have been restored, oiled, and varnished, along with the seats, benches, and floorboards. The original fittings have been re-chromed.

  • General condition

Historically significant from a design and engineering perspective, and equally important in terms of leisure boating culture. High quality throughout the craftsmanship, while still remaining genuinely practical and usable.

Facts about the model

The Realloy Pilen is regarded as something of a pioneer in fiberglass boat manufacturing. It was developed on Orust by Almagsvarvet and launched by Livbåtsvarvet in Gothenburg as one of the first mass-produced leisure boats made from color-infused, vacuum-molded fiberglass-reinforced polyester — a technology that was entirely new at the time.

The boat measures 4.85 meters in length and was designed as a spacious and relatively fast motorboat for its era, intended for outboard engines. Its design emerged during a period when recreational boating was rapidly expanding in Sweden, and the Pilen became an early example of the transition from wooden boats to modern fiberglass construction.

Production numbers were extremely limited — only around ten examples were built — which makes the model exceptionally rare today. The molds were later acquired by Kordaverken in Svanesund, which further developed the concept into the “Pilen” and “Kometen” models during the late 1950s.

Today, the 1954 Realloy Pilen is regarded as a classic vintage boat and an important piece of Swedish boating history, particularly because of its early use of fiberglass technology and its very limited production numbers.
