"This car is relatively untouched and has been driven sparingly since it arrived in Sweden. There are some details to review and address."

Description

This car was imported from the USA (Florida) in 2012 and was first registered for road use in Sweden on May 15 by its first owner. It briefly passed through a dealership before the current owner’s husband purchased it in March 2014. She then took over ownership in August 2023. Over the years, it has been driven sparingly during the summer months, and in recent years it has been stationary. It has now been started up and passed inspection on March 27 in preparation for sale. Comes with two sets of keys and various documents and literature (including a copy of the owner’s manual). Ready to drive.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Starts easily and the engine runs smoothly. All functions—steering, handling, automatic transmission, and brakes—felt solid during a test drive on country roads.

It has not been inspected on a lift, but what could be seen of the vital components looked good, and the vehicle inspection authority noted no issues with the undercarriage. Since the car has been stationary for some time, a thorough check-up is recommended.

  • Interior condition:

Nice and, as far as can be seen, original interior with normal wear for its age and mileage. One chrome trim piece is missing from the passenger seat. Steering wheel, controls, dashboard, and gauges are in good condition, though the odometer function is uncertain. There are some details worth checking, but the primary electrical functions are working well.

  • Exterior condition:

Good paintwork with normal wear consistent with the car’s age and mileage, including stone chips, scratches, scuffs, and a small dent on the trunk lid, among other minor imperfections. The hardtop is in great condition. Glass, chrome trim, seals, emblems, and lighting components are all in good shape, as are the wheels and tires. The engine bay and trunk area show typical signs of use.

During inspection, we were unable to fully raise the rear section of the soft top, so only the top and lid could be photographed and viewed in a partially raised (but not fixed) position—something in the mechanism was stiff. The soft top also shows signs of both age-related and wear-related damage where it contacts the lid’s struts. Something appears to be out of alignment, and the mechanism should be checked. The current owner and her husband have not used the soft top, instead opting to remove the hardtop entirely.

  • General condition:

A well-appointed car for its time, in U.S. specification. While there are some details that may need attention or adjustment, overall it's a charming and user-friendly classic—equally suited for use as a Grand Touring coupé or an open-top cruiser. A true classic and enthusiast's car.

Facts about the model

That both the terms Super and Sport were featured in the 1931 Mercedes SSKL — Super Sport Kompressor Leicht — is a well-known fact. However, whether the post-war Mercedes designation SL stands for Super Leicht (Super Light) or Sport Leicht (Sport Light) depends on who you ask in the history of Mercedes-Benz.

What we do know is that the new racer, the 300 SL with its iconic gullwing doors, launched in 1952 and was later developed into a more civilized road-going version produced from 1954 to 1957. When that model was discontinued, Mercedes instead introduced an open-top roadster version with the same performance and styling, built between 1957 and 1963.

At the same time, a slightly more modest and relaxed SL variant—the R121 Mercedes 190 SL—was produced from 1955 to 1963. When the time came to replace both of these, Mercedes chose to combine them into a single model: the W113 Mercedes 230 SL, better known as the Pagoda. This line continued with the 250 SL and 280 SL models through 1963 to 1971.

In April 1971, it was time for the Pagoda’s successor: the R107 Mercedes 350 SL, equipped with a 3.5-liter V8 engine producing 200 hp. Both safety and handling were significantly improved compared to its predecessor. In 1973, Mercedes introduced the 450 SL with 225 hp, primarily aimed at the U.S. market. For the 1974 model year, a six-cylinder variant was reintroduced. Production continued steadily over the years, and although the final model in 1989 looked quite similar to the original, it had received numerous technical upgrades along the way.

The 560 SL, built from 1986 to 1989, featured the largest engine in the series at 5547 cm³. Due to the addition of emissions control systems, extra displacement was needed to maintain performance. It featured Bosch fuel injection and produced 230 hp. This version was sold exclusively in the U.S. and Australia.

In total, 237,287 units of the R107 were produced between 1971 and 1989, before it was succeeded by the R129. From once being nicknamed things like “Pizza Racer” and “Dallas Moped,” the R107 has now rightfully claimed its place on the podium of classic Mercedes-Benz sports cars—and proudly wears the SL badge with honor.
