"The pleasure of driving a sleek Jaguar with a rattling analog diesel straight-six was never ours—but it must be an amusingly contradictory driving experience."

Description

The car was delivered new to its first owner in Sweden in 1965, likely in Kalmar County (H County). In the mid-1970s, it was purchased with a seized engine by the current owner's relative, Gilbert Sjöqvist in Nybro. Through a friend, he got the idea to convert the car to diesel—a rather unusual and ambitious undertaking, especially on a sporty Jaguar in what was then a diesel-unfriendly country like Sweden. But the project was clearly done thoroughly. Once the engine choice was made, they even enlisted the help of the French Embassy to find a suitable dealer for a brand-new Indenor/Peugeot six-cylinder diesel engine with a displacement of 3.2 liters. This engine was primarily intended for industrial and marine use, and Volvo Penta is also said to have produced a version of it.

Gilbert and his friend traveled to France themselves to pick up the engine. After the conversion was completed, Gilbert reportedly used the car as a daily driver well into the 1990s. The most recent approved inspection was carried out on 2016-06-23, which means the car was within a valid inspection period when the new regulations came into force on 2018-04-20.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Replacing the classic Jaguar straight-six must have been a well-considered decision—especially undertaking the project by personally purchasing and collecting the replacement engine in France. The gear shift knob with the overdrive button is not original; it feels more modern, and the gearbox may also have been replaced with one that is more compatible with the engine. The six-cylinder Indenor/Peugeot engine was running just a few years ago when the car and its crew attended a major car meet in Skåne. The short video clip was recorded in July 2022 when the car was brought out after a longer period in storage.

  • Interior condition:

Stylish and cozy, the interior is a typical English design in original condition, featuring leather and wood in good shape, as are the headliner and carpets. In the engine bay, there is some surface rust on bolt heads and other exposed components.

  • Exterior condition:

Repainted early on in white, likely from the original Golden Sand Metallic—the original color is visible on the spare wheel well cover in the trunk. The repaint may have coincided with the engine swap. The paint has held up well over the years. There is a minor blemish at the bottom mounting point of the mudguard on the right rear fender. Nice wire wheels fitted with period-correct Michelin X tires, which show some age-related cracking. The car sits a bit low in the rear suspension, reason unknown.

  • General condition:

An interesting engine installation in a classic Jaguar sports sedan, whose original six-cylinder petrol engine is typically held in high regard as an engineering icon. With a mechanical check-up before startup, a standard service, and perhaps another inspection, you’ll have a fun classic that’s sure to both provoke and delight those around you.
