Description

The current owner is both a devoted Saab enthusiast and a "Topponaut", which means they are equally passionate about camping with their Toppola camper. They have owned the car since 2014, and it is the special low-pressure turbo with 16 valves, producing 145 horsepower, which pairs nicely with the Toppola. The fuel consumption on the highway is approximately 0.85 liters per 10 kilometer. The car has a five-speed manual transmission and is equipped with Saab Touchgard functioning alarm and central locking. Two keys and two alarm transmitters are included. It has a towing hitch with a trailer weight capacity of 1500 kg and an engine block heater. The rear hatch is included, as well as the instruction manual, service booklet, and various documents. The car has passed inspection and is tax-exempt in Sweden.

This Toppola has been owned by the same family since 2009 and is one of twelve in the first generation, built in early 1982. Ten of them were sold in Sweden and two in Norway.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Starts easily and runs smoothly. Shifting, clutch and brakes appear to work well, and the chassis and body are in good condition. Some oil dripping occurs, and during annual inspection, a few dl of transmission oil may need to be topped up.

  • Interior condition:

Nice original interior in good condition, seats are comfortable and in good shape, as well as door panels and carpets. The headliner has some areas where it has been pinned. The fan control knob is not functioning. The temperature control knob works, and the heating is okay. The air distribution knob lacks vacuum, but the defroster airflow and two fan speeds with cabin air intake are functional.

The Toppola is complete and in original condition, with LED lighting in the sleeping area

  • Exterior condition:

Nice original paint, left rear door has been repainted. There are some hints of rust in the door frame in the front doors towards the front fender. Some scratches and stone chips. Black trim and glass in nice condition. Same goes for the engine and trunk compartment. Nice wheels and tires.

The Toppola is in a well-maintained original condition.

  • General condition:

Both the car and the Toppola are in a nice original condition and interesting for collectors. Together, they form a great classic combination that is both practical and attracts justified attention. Simply put, they represent a piece of Swedish motor and camping history.

Facts about the model

Saab persevered and sold relatively well during the 1970s. However, their models were starting to show their age, particularly the Saab 96. Nevertheless, in May 1978, the new Saab 900 made its debut, which was an evolution of the Saab 99 but with an entirely different aura. With its elongated body, it offered a unique experience and attracted many new buyers worldwide. From the model years 1979 to 1994, a variety of versions were produced with 2-, 3-, 4-, and 5-door bodies. They ranged from stylish convertibles to practical family cars with ample space. In the 1990 model year, the Saab 900 S was introduced, featuring a low-pressure turbo with 16 valves and 145 DIN horsepower. During these years, Saab introduced numerous technical innovations and distinctive solutions, which became a defining characteristic and cultivated a particular image among buyers. Saab drivers were not mainstream individuals; they were Saab people, embodying the Turbo spirit. It was an impressive achievement for a small manufacturer in the cold Nordic region.

The Toppola was a camper attachment originally designed for the Saab 99 Combi Coupé. The name was a combination of "Top" and the name of the designer, Arwo Pullola. It involved removing the rear hatch and installing the camper section, which was secured with three roof rack bars and a bolt in the trunk. The interior had a standing height of two meters, and the bed dimensions above the car roof were 170x200 cm. Most units had electrical connections, allowing for heating during winter use, among other amenities such as a sink and various equipment options. The weight difference, with the removal of the rear hatch and the addition of the Toppola, was approximately 115 kg. In addition to the Saab 99, it was also available for the Saab 900, 9000, and 9-3 models, as well as the Ford Sierra and Scorpio. Approximately 300 units were produced between 1982 and 1996.
