Description

This car arrived in Sweden in the fall of 2019, having previously been in California. Equipped with a V8 Y-block 312ci engine, it is an impressive vehicle from the 1950s, when fins, chrome and glass, and stylish color combinations were all the rage. The current owner purchased the car in July 2020 and has updated the interior and door rubber seals. Otherwise, the car has been sparingly driven during the light half of the year. The color combination of cream-white and light blue with gold detailing is very pleasant and so '50s. An original non-working radio comes with a newer stereo and speakers. Some nice documents and history are also included.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Starts easily and runs smoothly, leaking a little oil, probably from the crankcase ventilation. A Merc-o-matic automatic transmission that shifts okay, but no kickdown. Drum brakes all around that work well. Some knocking or noise over bumps and there's a bit of squeaking. Not checked on a lift, but it looks decent for its age from what could be seen.

  • Interior condition:

The car has recently received an upgrade, and both door panels, carpets, seats, and headliner are in great condition. There is some patina around the instrumentation.

  • Exterior condition:

It appears to have the original paint, which is now faded and has some visible wear. The chrome and glass are in good condition with some patina. The tires are in good shape. The engine compartment and trunk show signs of wear.

  • General condition:

A relatively untouched vehicle in its original condition, ready to be used and/or enhanced. Regardless, you get a delightful classic from the 1950s.

Facts about the model

Mercury became a new brand under Ford in 1938. They wanted a vehicle positioned between Ford and Lincoln, competing with Buick and Oldsmobile, which were positioned between Chevrolet and Cadillac, owned by their main competitor GM. Towards the end of the 1950s, when Ford was introducing its new Edsel model, they decided to push Mercury further up the value chain, closer to Lincoln. Many design elements and details were inspired by the "space and rocket age" that was prominent during that time. The cars were generously equipped with abundant chrome. Towards the end of the 1950s, Ford faced challenges, including the failure of the new Edsel model. Additionally, the era of excessive chrome and fin frenzy was coming to an end, and car production quickly shifted towards a more streamlined and compact design. However, the Mercury Montclair remains one of the era's true design classics.
