Ford Model 78 Club Cabriolet 3.6 V8 — 1937

Swedish-sold Ford with a loyal and long-standing first owner already documented in the Swedish magazine "Teknikens Värld" in 1977. Today, it is restored with all the correct details and equipment, to probably better than new condition.

"Stylish and better than new after beeing the owner's hobby project during the pandemic."

Description

It was delivered by Philipssons in Stockholm to a Birger Andersson in 1937. Birger cared for and drove the car sparingly for a full 45 years. The article about Birger and his Ford in Teknikens Värld was published in 1977, and according to the registry, the car was sold in 1982. There were three owner changes before the current owner bought the Ford in 2020. After a tip from a friend in the car exhibition industry about the car being sold by an estate, there was also an insight that the COVID-19 pandemic could be long-lasting and a project would be needed to satisfy the hunger for occupation. And so it was. Together with his brother-in-law, a vintage Ford specialist, he drew up guidelines, possibilities, and lists of what needed to be done. He thinks the car is fantastic, but his heart lies more in later Americans and custom-oriented cars. It's time for a new project.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

By all accounts, the car has not rolled more than just over 12,000 miles. The engine is surprisingly quiet with low levels of both mechanical and exhaust noise. The transmission is robust and feels great, but it's important to handle it correctly. Engine listening, gear feeling, and a little throttle control sometimes are good qualities and skills for a driver to have on board.

  • Interior condition:

The sofa and door sides are made of comfortable leather in their original design, with new carpets of the right cut and functioning beautiful details on the dashboard, including the clock which was an appreciated original accessory at the time.

  • Exterior condition:

Solid green paint in impeccable condition with a small golden pinstripe along the waistline. The convertible top and its cover are newly sewn, and the exclusive and correct hubcaps were tracked down in the USA and were not cheap. Furthermore, details such as the searchlight, turn signal arrows, mirrors, and fog lights are restored to original specification.

  • General condition:

Thoroughly restored with meticulous knowledge of details and specifications. A truly fine car from the 1930s with Swedish history, and perhaps it was also assembled in Ford's assembly plant in Frihamnen in Stockholm. It was completed in 1930 and was active until the end of the 1940s. The timeline matches, in any case.

Facts about the model

The Ford Model 78 Cabriolet was produced for a short period, from 1937 to 1940, and had many equipment options for its time. The car quickly became popular among buyers and was produced in a relatively large number until 1940, despite its relatively short production time. During World War II, Ford shifted much of its production to military vehicles, and the Model 78 Cabriolet was discontinued.
