Volkswagen Jetta 1.6 CL — 1985

A restrained 40-year-old that has weathered the years well and is in fine original condition with some scars and signs of use. The anonymous utility cars of the past are now disappearing quickly from our roads but are well worth attention and a second chance.

"A spry vehicle that has done its job over the years and still retains both usability and a discreet charm. On the outside, inside, and technically, it's a car in fine original condition that can be elevated a notch or two with little effort. In its time, it lived in the shadow of the Golf. Perhaps the idea and motto were as follows: "A Golf GTI might be spirited, but a Jetta with a trunk can carry more.""

Description

This car was registered as new in Sweden in March 1985. The first owner, reportedly a lady from Bollnäs, drove the car until 2012. During those years, the car covered just over 190,000 kilometers. Since then, it has not been driven more than about 1,000 kilometers but has changed owners several times. It is inspected and ready to drive.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Starts easily and runs smoothly and quietly in the engine and drivetrain, although a bit jerky when on choke. Steering, clutch, and shifting are problem-free. Brakes work well. Not checked on a lift but looks good in vital parts and vehicle inspection had no objections. Everything appears to function well.

  • Interior condition:

The original interior has held up well. It's somewhat sun-bleached but intact and nice in the seats, rear seat, and carpets. The headliner is fine, as are the door sides and panels, though there is some dirt/moisture damage on the driver's door. During inspection, the passenger seat could not be folded, which should be easy to fix. The instrumentation is nice and there's a pleasant Nardi steering wheel. Everything appears to function. It has a newer CD-radio unit.

  • Exterior condition:

The car likely has its original paint, which is in good condition but could benefit from a polish to enhance it further. There are stone chips and signs of wear typical for its age. Glass, plastic, and rubber components also show some wear and tear. It features nice BBS wheels with BMW hubcaps. The tires are in good condition. Both the engine and trunk spaces are in good shape for the car's age and mileage. There's a bit of moisture in the trunk after car washing.

  • General condition:

In the shadow of the Golf, this model became more anonymous. With two doors and a beige look, it's not a car that stands out. However, with that said, it is a pleasant and agreeable vehicle from the 1980s, with nearly 40 years on the road. Once a relatively common sight, it is now, in this condition, becoming endangered. The utility vehicles of the past are increasingly in demand and interesting as enthusiast vehicles and classics.

Facts about the model

The Jetta model, a Golf sedan with a traditional trunk, debuted at the Frankfurt Auto Show in September 1979. The car was technically based on the immensely popular Golf, which had created its own vehicle class.

Like the Golf, ItalDesign, led by Giorgetto Giugiaro, was responsible for the design of the Jetta. Apart from the rear section, the interior was somewhat more upscale than in the Golf. The new model was available in both two- and four-door versions and was produced in its first iteration, Series 1, as model years 1980-1984. Series 2 was manufactured as model years 1985-1992. It achieved greater impact than the first version, and in North America, it became the best-selling European car in 1991, outselling the Golf. As before, it was essentially identical to the Golf in terms of technology. In subsequent versions, the name Jetta was replaced by Vento and eventually Bora, before making a comeback as Jetta in certain markets.
