"Un-renovated and in good used condition. 200,000 km since new. Delivered newly inspected"

Description

Elegant luxury model designed by the same man who designed the 300 SL and the Pagoda. It was inspired by the cars of the time in the USA, which resulted in Mercedes' only model with characteristic fins on the rear wings.

This car was sold new in Jönköping and was used until 1978 when it was put away in a garage for almost 15 years. When it was produced in the early nineties, it was serviced and the brakes were refurbished. The bodywork was unusually intact and the paintwork is good, with the exception of the front wings which had some rust spots around the headlights, which is why the wings were replaced with new ones and painted together with the lower right side of the car. Apart from this, the car has its original paint. It has never had any major rust damage and has been properly tectyl-treated since new. From the nineties until now it has been used by enthusiasts and has recently received a service and general overhaul. The car is nice to drive with a lively engine, good oil pressure and an easy-shifting gearbox. A steering wheel gear stick was on this model to enable a full sofa in the important US market.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Runs well in the engine and gearbox. Easy steering and good brakes. No vibrations. Delivered newly inspected.

  • Interior condition:

Rare complete and original interior in red artificial leather. Nice door cards, dashboard and headliner. Also good mats, but some dry cracks are visible in the rubber mats.

  • Exterior condition:

Good body without damage and mostly original paint. However, the original paintwork is somewhat dull. Some shade differences can be seen. There are some repairs and some surface rust on a threshold (picture). Nice chrome and glass. Even the rubber seals are ok. The car does not appear to have been traffic damaged or welded. All the gaps match and the body is straight. A solid feeling in the doors. At the time of the documentation, there was a sudden rain shower, and in some pictures, you can see white streaks on the paintwork, this is not damage but raindrops.

  • General condition:

Very good unrestored used condition and relatively low mileage, it gives a good overall impression that can be further enhanced with a polish and upholstery valet. A little clean in the engine bay wouldn't hurt either.

Facts about the model

Daimler-Benz's classic six-cylinder Heckfloße W111 was produced between 1959 and 1968 as a later model. The coupe and cabriolet models were built until 1971, however with toned-down fenders. The body shared with the four-cylinder 190 had 145 millimeters longer nose to accommodate the straight 2.2/2.3-liter sixes. Panoramic windows and fenders that had been the highest fashion in the USA in the fifties inspired designer Friedrich Geiger to this beautiful model. The successor W108 was already presented in 1965 but the Heckfloße model remained alive, among other things, as 230S - as an entry model in the S-class until 1968. Friedrich Geiger is best known for the design behind some of MB's most beautiful cars such as the 300 SL (Gullwing), 230/250 SL Pagoda and 600 limousine. The current car is in the last version of the W111 series, and was built from 1966 to 1968.
