"Perfect object for the enthusiast who wishes to restore a Swedish-sold 1950s Jaguar. A reasonable starting point for the work is to install a steering gear for easier handling. In the next step, one can choose to do an inspection and start service on the engine, or prepare for painting."

Description

This is a Jaguar Mark VIII with Swedish provenance. It was newly sold in 1958 by Jaguar's general agent Fredlunds Automobil in Stockholm. The car was assigned registration number A 53147. The first owner was a furniture dealer. At this time, left-hand traffic prevailed in Sweden. Despite this, this particular car was delivered with the steering wheel on the left side, to the delight of modern-day drivers.

It has had 7 registered owners since new. However, since 1978 it has only had 1 user. The last inspection by Svensk Bilprovning was carried out in 1980. The car was taken out of service in 1987 and has not been on the road since. The owner who bought the car in 1987 started a restoration. The car did not seem to be particularly bad and the few rust damages were repaired. The car's paint was then sanded down. However, the restoration was halted. The car has since been stored in a dry and well-ventilated garage.

The current owner acquired it together with another English car in 2022. He does not have time to restore both cars and has decided to let go of the Mark VIII. A certificate from Jaguar Heritage Trust with the car's build details from the factory is included. Click the link to open the PDF. The odometer currently reads 4962 miles, but it is not known if it is accurate. However, we do know that the odometer read 3500 miles in 1977. One of the pictures shows what the car looked like in 1977. A copy of the first registration certificate is available. See picture.

According to Transportstyrelsen's records, there are 11 examples of the Jaguar Mark VIII, 1956-1958 registered in Sweden.

Good fit of the body panels, with even door gaps. Nice front bumper and double grille guards included. Rear bumper missing. Front and rear windows included.

  • General condition:

Nice renovation project with Swedish provenance that can become really nice with reasonable effort.

Owner's comment

This car was included when I took over some classic English cars. Unfortunately, I don't have time to restore it. A lot of parts are included, in some cases duplicates from a donor car. My assessment is that it is almost complete, except for the steering box and rear bumper. Chrome moldings, door handles, grille, etc. are polished and stored in plastic packaging ready for installation.

Facts about the model

The Jaguar Mark VIII is a luxury four-door car that was introduced by Jaguar at the London Motor Show in 1956. It was an upgrade of its predecessor, the Mark VII, which had been introduced 6 years earlier. With the Mark VIII, Jaguar continued with a winning concept that involved high performance, good handling, plenty of space for five people in a very elegant and luxurious body. It had proven to be a very attractive combination that also attracted wealthy Americans with a sense of style and tradition. The changes to the Mark VIII compared to its predecessor were a more powerful engine, now at 210 horsepower, a full-width windscreen, and some detail changes to the grille.

The Mark VIII was produced in 6227 units until 1958 when it was replaced by the Jaguar Mark IX.
