Volvo Amazon B18 — 1964

Having had only two genuine long-term owners over the years, the car offers a solid foundation for further refinement—or simply to be preserved as a pleasant summer driver. It is roadworthy apart from a recommended inspection and overhaul of the braking system.

"There seem to be Amazons appearing all the time. They get restored, re-registered, put back on the road, or come out of storage. And here’s another one. Nice."

Description

The car was delivered to its first owner in April 1964. He kept and used his Amazon for an unusually long period, and in 1987 ownership passed to the father of the current owner. A body restoration was then begun and was largely completed, after which the car spent long periods in storage.

The most recent—and therefore final—approved inspection was carried out on 13 May 2016. At that time, the car was within a valid inspection period when the current exemption rules for historic vehicles came into effect on 20 April 2018.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

Starts easily and eagerly. The clutch, gearbox, and chassis all feel good, but the brakes pull to the left. Braking performance is uneven, with the right-front brake caliper most likely being the cause. A new owner will need to rectify this issue and also investigate why the charging warning light remains illuminated.

  • Interior condition

Good and attractive interior with a small tear in the driver's seat backrest; a new upholstery cover for the left-hand seat is therefore included. Nice dashboard with no cracks on the upper surface, and the wrinkle-finish paint on the instrument cluster remains intact. The full rubber floor mat is also undamaged and complete, requiring only some cleaning. The headliner has suffered some attention from mice, and a replacement headliner is included.

  • Exterior condition

Older repaint, most likely carried out in the late 1980s. All bodywork was completed at that time, and the car has seen little use since. The well-known welded seam in line with the door edges has been covered with paint/filler. One of the grille bars sits slightly crooked. Older Michelin XZX tyres, but in good condition and period-correct in appearance, with good tread remaining.

  • General condition

With an overhaul of the brakes and a check of the charging system, this would be a sensible and user-friendly classic. After that, it should make a reliable enthusiast’s car, and there is a special charm and character to using an Amazon as everyday transport during the summer months.

Facts about the model

For many Swedes, the Amazon was the first car of their youth in the 1970s and 1980s, much as the Volvo 740, 940 and later the 850 have been for subsequent generations. In the 1960s, that role belonged to the PV. Countless Swedish drivers spent their first years behind the wheel of a Volvo.

Subjectively, the Amazon is the most attractive of the group, but even from an objective standpoint it is a design that has aged remarkably well. The final model year of the Volvo Amazon was 1970. Production began in 1956 and ended on 3 July 1970, when the last Amazon rolled off the assembly line at Volvo’s Torslanda factory. A total of 667,791 examples were produced, making it Volvo’s most-produced model up to that point.

During its final model year, the Amazon was available only as a two-door model fitted with the B20 engine, which had been introduced in 1969. When production ended, the Amazon was fully replaced by the Volvo 140 series. The last Amazon built is today preserved in Volvo’s collection in Gothenburg.
