MG MGB GT 1800 — 1971

Swedish-market car with a documented history and only four owners throughout its lifetime. Practical, economical to run, and a charming representative of the model. The classic sunroof enhances the driving experience and also serves, to some extent, as a comfortable substitute for the open-air qualities of the roadster version.

"A charming and practical British classic presented in attractively honest condition. Just the right amount of sporty, just the right amount of classic, and unmistakably British. Delightful."

Description

The car was delivered to its first owner, Monica Möllefors of Malmö, by the local dealer Scanauto in February 1972. Mrs. Möllefors traded in a Fiat Siata Spring—a 1930s-inspired kit car based on the Fiat 850—which was valued at SEK 7,000, and paid a further SEK 14,000 to complete the purchase of her new MGB GT at a total price of SEK 21,000.

Mrs. Möllefors kept the car until 1988, when it passed into the care of another woman from Malmö. She remained its owner until 2007, when the GT found a new home in Kristianstad. There, the current owner acquired the car in August 2017.

Since then, it has seen only light summer use and has been conscientiously maintained. Work carried out during the current ownership includes a rebuild of the carburettors, refurbishment of the brake and clutch hydraulic systems, and the installation of a new alternator.

The most recent—and, under current regulations, final—approved roadworthiness inspection was completed on 6 August 2017.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

Starts readily when the choke is used correctly and settles into the characteristic burble expected of an MG with a proper exhaust system. The overdrive works well and is a welcome companion on the road at modern traffic speeds. The rear leaf springs show some surface rust that looks worse than it is and would be easy to address cosmetically. The engine bay has an honest, well-used appearance. Relatively new batteries—two 12-volt units connected in parallel—provide plenty of extra starting power.

  • Interior condition

Attractive, complete, and clean interior in original specification. Neat instruments and controls, along with a classic riveted wooden steering wheel that adds a sporting touch. A loose trim panel is present on the inside of the tailgate.

  • Exterior condition

Older repaint in presentable and respectable condition with normal signs of use. A few filler-related paint bubbles and some blistering on the right rear wing. Chrome wire wheels with minor surface rust that should polish away relatively easily. The remaining chrome trim is in good condition, although the front bumper overriders are missing. The Webasto sunroof is watertight, intact, and a particularly appealing feature.

  • General condition

An honest driver-quality example that still represents its marque—and the accessible, affordable British sports car of the 1960s—very well. Here presented in its updated 1970s guise, featuring details such as a padded dashboard, head restraints, black grille, and rubber-faced bumper overriders.

Facts about the model

The enclosed shooting brake version, the MGB GT, was introduced in 1965 and styled by Pininfarina. Offering considerably more luggage space than the open roadster, it was also far more practical, while differences elsewhere were largely limited to revised springs and anti-roll bars. The MGC was a six-cylinder variant produced between 1967 and 1969, while the ultimate performance version was the MGB V8, powered by Rover’s lightweight aluminium V8 engine.

Thanks to the MGB’s long production run and large production numbers—continuing into the 1980s—virtually all spare parts and accessories remain readily available today, both as original components and newly manufactured aftermarket replacements. Widely appreciated by enthusiasts, the MGB GT is a sporting yet relatively practical collector’s car with enduring appeal and stable market values.
