BMW 1602 2,0 — 1975

Mechanically upgraded and great fun to drive, benefiting in particular from a larger engine and a more modern differential. Finished in a racy shade of red and sitting with an excellent stance.

"From the writer’s admittedly subjective perspective, the driving position is particularly appealing: low-slung, with the steering wheel set high and close to the driver. On the road, the car acquits itself very well, complemented by an engine that delivers just the right amount of eager performance."

Description

The car was delivered new in Sweden in June 1975, possibly to northern Sweden, as owners recorded between 1994 and 2020 were based in locations including Piteå and Umeå. In time, the car made its way to Falkenberg and subsequently to the previous owner, who carried out the extensive upgrades it benefits from today. All original components have been retained with the exception of the engine.

The most recent approved inspection—and, under current regulations, the final one required—was completed on 29 October 2023.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

Fitted with a larger 2.0-litre engine and Solex twin-choke carburettors. According to the previous owner, the engine has covered only around 20,000 kilometres since its rebuild. Output is approximately 100 horsepower. A differential from an E21 323i with a 3.45:1 final drive ratio has been installed, and the car has been lowered by approximately 40 mm using Bilstein yellow shock absorbers. At the same time, the front brake discs and pads were replaced, along with all six brake hoses. A new electric fuel pump has also been fitted.

  • Interior condition

Original interior with normal signs of wear consistent with age and use. The instrument cluster has been replaced with one incorporating a tachometer, while the original unit is included with the car. The odometer has not been adjusted following the change, but according to the previous owner, the car has covered just over 160,000 kilometres in total.

  • Exterior condition

Finished in an attractive, newer repaint in its original Verona Red colour. New Alpina-style replica wheels, measuring 6x15 inches at the front and 7x15 inches at the rear, were fitted a year ago together with 195/50 R15 Falken tyres. There is slight contact with the front wheel arches at full steering lock. The original wheels have been retained and are included with the car.

  • General condition

A fine representative of BMW’s former slogan, Freude am Fahren—freely translated as “the joy of driving.” In this case, that philosophy comes wrapped in a tastefully enhanced and characterful piece of 1970s design.

Facts about the model

Once BMW had resumed production after the Second World War, its range consisted of a diverse mix of motorcycles, microcars, luxury saloons and sports cars. In the early 1960s, the company began to focus its efforts, and the Neue Klasse—a spacious and modern mid-sized saloon with clean, contemporary styling—proved to be a major success.

By the mid-1960s, BMW recognised the need for a smaller model to meet growing demand from working- and middle-class buyers. Drawing heavily on the successful Neue Klasse formula, the company developed a more compact car that initially featured the 1.6-litre engine and was simply named the 1600-2. The rest, as they say, is history.

Over time, the “2” became fully integrated into the model designation, giving rise to the 1502, 1602, 1802 and 2002 variants, along with fuel-injected “i” and “tii” models, each reflecting differences in engine size and induction. The range expanded to include two-door saloons, cabriolets, cabrio-coaches, hatchback variants and, at the top of the hierarchy, the legendary turbocharged model introduced for the 1973 model year.

The BMW 02 Series remained in production until 1977, with approximately 868,000 examples built and only minor cosmetic revisions throughout its lifespan. Regardless of engine specification, the formula remained the same: a lively, engaging car with excellent road manners and rewarding handling. It was a favourite among enthusiastic drivers and equally popular in motorsport circles, where its balance, agility and tuning potential earned it a lasting reputation.
