"This car has been owned by a true Volvo enthusiast and has been his pride and joy. It has received careful maintenance and added upgrades for extra performance. However, it hasn’t been driven much in recent years—just under 2,000 km in the past 10 years—and has been resting in a garage. Now it’s time for a new owner to take over. A thorough inspection and possible servicing are recommended."

Description

This car was registered for road use on December 9, 1983. The current owner acquired it in August 1994. A true Volvo enthusiast, he dedicated significant time and effort to working on and optimizing his vehicles. The same goes for this turbocharged machine, which was fitted with various performance parts to increase power. For instance, the rear of the hood has been raised to accommodate some of these modifications, and the battery was relocated to the trunk.

Most of the performance upgrades have since been removed, but they are included with the car, along with extensive documentation. There are three binders full of information on the accessories, alarm system, and other installed features. The original owner's manual is also included. The most recent inspection was carried out on September 21, 2020, at 214,270 kilometers.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Starts without issue and the engine and drivetrain run smoothly. Taken on a short, gentle test drive in a suburban area, where the steering, clutch, gearbox, and brakes all appeared to function well. However, a general inspection and service are recommended.

The car has not been inspected on a lift, but from what was visible underneath, the vital components appeared to be in good condition. That said, being a 40-year-old vehicle, hidden surprises are always possible. There were signs of rust or small bubbles along the lower edge of one door, visible on the driver’s side. Wheel arch edges felt solid.

  • Interior condition:

Original interior apart from the front seats, which have been replaced—reportedly sourced from a BMW. Otherwise, the rear seat, door panels, headliner, and carpets are in good condition. Steering wheel, controls, dashboard, and gauges are original and fully functional. Additional gauges are also installed. The radio has been removed. The manual sunroof operates flawlessly.

  • Exterior condition:

Appears to have original paint with normal wear consistent with age and mileage. There is a small dent on the tailgate, and the rear edge of the hood is slightly raised. Glass, chrome, rubber and plastic parts, emblems, and lighting components are all in similar, well-kept condition. Nice original wheels fitted with good tires. Both the engine bay and trunk are in good condition. The battery has been relocated to the trunk.

  • General condition:

The Volvo 240 Turbo holds iconic status and is highly sought after. This particular car remains largely in original condition, but comes with interesting performance upgrades should one wish to further enhance its power. Either way, it’s a true classic and enthusiast’s vehicle with collector value.

Facts about the model

The Volvo 140, which was updated to the 240 model in 1975, is a true classic and a deeply rooted icon in the Swedish national identity. Whether you were brought home from the hospital in a taxi, rode to IKEA with your parents, or went to the countryside with your grandparents, nearly everyone in Sweden has some connection to these cars.

Over the years, numerous versions and updates were made. When the new 740 model was introduced in 1984, many believed the “old” 240 had reached the end of its road—but Volvo had other plans and continued to develop the 240 series.

Through the years, the car received a variety of engines—petrol, diesel, and turbocharged—and came in two-, four-, and five-door body styles. There were versions with sportier features and extra comfort, but perhaps most emblematic of the Swedish welfare era were the simpler DL and GL models.

There were certainly faster and more glamorous cars on the market, but few could match the Volvo 240’s unique combination of simplicity, durability, quality, and safety. It was the definition of a down-to-earth family car.

But the 240 wasn’t only a family wagon—Volvo launched the B21ET turbocharged engine in 1981 to compete with Saab’s increasingly successful 99 Turbos from the late 1970s. With the 240 Turbo, Volvo suddenly had a sporty model in its lineup, and sales soared in the U.S., U.K., and Italy. Volvo also raced the 240 with great success, winning the European Touring Car Championship (ETCC) in 1984 and 1985—a major achievement for a car many considered outdated.

The 240 Turbo was eventually succeeded by the 740 Turbo, but during its final years in 1984–1985, the 240 Turbo was equipped with the same base engine used in the race cars. This very car features such an engine, making it a rare collector’s item and an important piece of Volvo’s history.

In total, over 2.8 million units of the 240 were produced. And even now, more than 30 years after the model was discontinued, they can still be seen on Swedish roads every day.
