Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Starts easily and the engine runs smoothly and quietly. During a short test drive in a residential area, the drivetrain, steering, automatic transmission with kickdown, handling, and brakes all performed as they should.

The car has not been inspected on a lift, but everything visible appeared to be in good condition. No remarks from the vehicle inspection regarding the underbody.

  • Interior condition:

Nice and well-preserved original interior, consistent with the car’s age and mileage, offering good comfort in both the front seats and rear bench. Door panels and trim are in good condition, as are the textile floor mats. Steering wheel, controls, dashboard, and gauges are all in good and fully functional condition. All electrical functions, including the convertible top mechanism, work properly. Some minor paint wear on a few buttons. The A/C blows cold, the stereo works well, and so does the trip computer.

  • Exterior condition:

Appears to have a nice and glossy original paint finish, though there is a slight color variation on the left rear fender—reason unknown. Glass, plastics, rubber seals, trim pieces, emblems, and lighting details are all in good condition considering the car’s age and mileage. Wheels are in nice shape and fitted with Michelin tires. The hubcaps show some patina, with one having been replaced. The soft top is tight and in good condition. Both the engine bay and luggage compartment are also well-kept and in original condition.

  • General condition:

This model has, just like that, already passed the 20-year mark. It’s well on its way to classic status and already qualifies as an enthusiast and collector vehicle. As such, it’s a sensible choice—both practical to use and, in this case, preserved in fine original condition. A true Swedish classic.

Facts about the model

Generation 1 of the new 9-3, built from 1998 to 2003, was essentially a facelift of the earlier 900. With Generation 2 and the 2003 model year, far more changed. The old hatchback body (the “Combi Coupé”) disappeared, and Saab instead launched a saloon—known in Saab-speak as the SportSedan. The following year brought a brand-new Cabriolet.

These versions were completely redesigned and sat on GM’s Epsilon platform, shared with cars such as the Opel Vectra and Cadillac BLS. As ever, Saab offered everything from basic trim levels to the potent Aero variants.

Saab’s convertibles bounced between a few production sites. Early Cabriolets were built by Valmet in Finland, but the second-generation 9-3 Cabriolet, introduced for the 2004 model year, came from Magna-Steyr in Austria. Toward the end of the run, production returned to Trollhättan, although the very last 2012 model-year cars were assembled in Nyköping.

The Cabriolet could be ordered with several engines, the most popular being the 2.0 T: a 1,998 cc, 16-valve turbocharged four delivering 210 hp. In the early years it was paired with either a five-speed manual gearbox or a five-speed automatic.
