"Unusually late-production Puch Florida. By this point, the Florida had acquired something of an “old-man” reputation, and most 15-year-olds preferred the long-seat Puch Dakota instead. The moped is fully road-ready and would make an ideal addition to any moped collection."

Description

The Puch Florida was the best-selling Puch model in Sweden until the launch of the Dakota in 1966. This particular example is from 1976 and has only 2,500 km on the clock. The current owner bought it 10 years ago from the man who originally picked it up new. The original owner’s manual is included with the moped.

Please note that this is a remote auction. All images and information regarding the moped and its technical condition have been provided by the owner. BWA has not inspected the moped in person.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

No issues noted. Only 2,500 km ridden. Equipped with a 3-speed V3 engine with matching numbers—that is, the engine and frame numbers are identical. The tires have been replaced for improved safety, and a new clutch has been installed. The original tires are included separately.

  • Interior condition:

Seat, grips, footpeg rubbers, and other details are all intact and in good condition.

  • Exterior condition:

Original condition, never repainted. There is some wear from the throttle cable rubbing against the headlight housing—see photo. A few small paint chips and minor surface wear are present. Some scratches on the air filter have been touched up with matching paint.

  • General condition:

It's hard to find a better unrestored, low-mileage Puch Florida from the 1970s.

Facts about the model

The Puch Florida was the best-selling Puch model in Sweden until the launch of the Dakota in 1966.
Puch’s first moped model in Sweden, introduced in the spring of 1955, was the MS 50. Only 300 units were sold, and it served as the forerunner to the moped that would later be named Florida. Visually, it was almost identical to the later Florida models. The design was gradually developed throughout the late 1950s, but the big breakthrough came in 1961 when Swedish law changed to allow mopeds with kickstarters.

Until then, mopeds were required to have pedals—just like a bicycle—in order to be road-legal in Sweden. To quickly adapt, Puch came up with a brilliant solution: they removed the pedals and replaced one side with a forward-facing kickstarter. It was mounted on the right-hand side of the engine, while the left pedal was replaced with a chrome spacer. Just like that—Puch mopeds had modern kickstart engines with virtually no development cost.

Swedish 15-year-olds now had kickstarted mopeds, and Puch could continue production without skipping a beat. Suddenly, the older pedal-equipped Puch Floridas felt outdated. Many teenagers solved this by removing the left pedal and using only the right one as a makeshift kickstarter.

Originally, the Puch Florida came with a 2-speed handlebar-shifted engine. With the introduction of the kickstarter, Puch transitioned to a 2-speed foot-shifted version. Once again, the engineers found a clever solution—adding a linkage arm through the footbridge under the engine to operate a gear pedal on the left side. Another stroke of genius! Same engine, now in a more modern configuration. This solution became known as the cric-crac gearbox, a nickname derived from the mechanical clanking and crunching sound made when teenagers slammed it into second gear at full throttle.

In 1969, Puch introduced a more modern 3-speed engine called the V3. Officially launched for the 1970 model year, many 1969 models were already equipped with it. Unlike the previous engine, the V3 featured a backward-kicking kickstarter and a gear shift axle that went directly into the side of the engine casing.
