"A Meccano set for grown-ups."

Description

This is the story of an Adler, and it all began just over 30 years ago when the current owner’s father happened to bump into an old friend by chance. Both grew up in Eskilstuna. It turned out that the friend had, for many years, developed a deep interest in Adler cars, having restored one or two cabriolets in addition to some saloon models.

The father, a car enthusiast himself, vaguely recalled having seen such an Adler cabriolet in his youth. This encounter led to a joint project: the father, the friend, and another acquaintance decided to each restore an Adler cabriolet. The friend had the knowledge, a vast supply of parts, and valuable contacts.

The father’s car initially consisted of a chassis and a few components. The work then began to gather more parts. The friend contributed many of them, and a great number of pieces were newly fabricated using his car as the template. Fenders and the boot lid were produced in England, while many smaller metal parts were made in Nyköping and other places. Slowly, the car began to take shape. The father received valuable help from Kent S. Olsson, a fellow enthusiast and collector based in Svenljunga.

When Kent passed away several years ago, the project came to a complete halt.

According to the current owner, many parts for the car are present, including a newly rebuilt engine, an additional engine in parts, and gearboxes (see photos). The front axle is mounted, along with various smaller components.

This is a charming pre-war automotive puzzle, just waiting for someone to complete this elegant vehicle. While it cannot be guaranteed with certainty that every part needed for full completion is included, it’s clear that there are many duplicates and extra parts—see photos.

Facts about the model

Adler (German for "eagle") was one of the most innovative car manufacturers in Germany before the Second World War. While others stuck to proven technology, Adler dared to think differently. With the help of engineer Hans Gustav Röhr, they developed front-wheel-drive cars—a true modern breakthrough in the 1930s.

When the Trumpf Junior Sport was launched, it was not just a technical statement—it was an aesthetic exclamation mark.

Design: A Work of Art in Motion
Picture a low, sleek body crafted by the renowned coachbuilder Ambi-Budd in Berlin. It sweeps forward like a brushstroke, with sculpted fenders framing the wheels and a front end so self-assured you half expect the car to speak. Dual chrome headlamps gaze ahead with a kind of modern confidence, while the grille—a vertical chrome frame with fine mesh—is a stylish disguise for the technical innovation beneath.

The roofline is low, but the cabin is airy. It accommodates two—three at a stretch—in a sports coupé where form follows function, but never forgets beauty.

And the colors? Bold. Dark green, burgundy, sometimes cream with contrasting fenders. Every inch of it radiates continental confidence.

Technology: Front-Wheel Drive in a Sports Car—A Sensation
Under the hood sits a 986 cc inline twin-cylinder side-valve engine producing around 25 horsepower. That may not sound like much today, but thanks to its light weight (under 750 kg) and, most notably, front-wheel drive, the car delivered grip and handling that were revolutionary at the time.

In an era when most cars wandered down the road like boats in open water, the Adler Trumpf Junior Sport held the line like a cobra glued to the asphalt.

The 4-speed gearbox may not have delivered blistering acceleration, but the driving feel was sharp and refined. This was a car for people who wanted to drive—not just ride.

Details and Interior
Inside, the cabin offered a surprisingly luxurious feel for its time: a brushed metal dashboard, a slim but stylish steering wheel, and seats in leather or cloth. Everything was carefully thought out—efficiently German, but without stiffness. There was a sense of technical romance here—a preview of Bauhaus meets motoring.

A Sports Car for the People—Almost
The Trumpf Junior Sport wasn’t built for the masses—but it wasn’t just for the upper class either. It was aimed at young, forward-thinking Germans with an eye for technology, design, and freedom. It was the car you bought to stand out from the crowd, to be seen at cafés in Munich or cruising along the Rhine Valley with the wind in your hair.

1936—A Year of Contrasts
But 1936 was also a time of deep contradictions. The Berlin Olympics were underway, Nazism had gripped the country—and even this freedom-inspired sports car became part of that time, whether it wanted to or not. Soon, the purpose of factories would shift drastically.

Today—A Rolling Rarity
To see an Adler Trumpf Junior Sport today is like opening a book from a parallel future that never happened. It’s more than a car—it's a piece of industrial design, a vision of what the automotive world might have become if history had taken a different path.

And yet, now and then, it still appears—gleaming in the golden light at a classic car meet, with the proud Adler eagle emblem soaring across the hood.
