Description
This Beetle was sold new in the USA. It came to Sweden in 2021. The current owner bought it from the car dealership that imported it. The owner was not satisfied with the car as the engine was running quite poorly. Despite assistance from reputable independent VW experts, they couldn’t get the direct-injected original engine sorted out. Finally, they managed to obtain a 1600 replacement engine with a carburetor, which was installed instead. Then the car ran beautifully and without any problems.
(Unfortunately, the original fuel-injected engine was discarded and sent to recycling.) After enjoying the open Volkswagen Beetle for a few summers, the owner is now selling the car through bilwebauctions.
Technical data
Condition
-
Mechanical condition
It starts without any problems and has the distinctive exhaust sound typical for the Beetle. Equipped with a replacement 1600cc engine with a carburetor, delivering 54hp. (Originally, the car was delivered with a fuel-injected engine producing 60hp.) It runs smoothly on the road. The convertible top is easy to open and close.
-
Interior condition
White artificial leather. The interior gives a good impression. There are some signs of previous coloring. On the driver’s seat, this has begun to show wear, especially on the seat cushion. Please refer to the images. The upholstery panel on the lower part of the dashboard is missing.
-
Exterior condition
The car has been repainted, but we’re not exactly sure when. The paint has held up fairly well. There are some small paint blisters on the body, especially at the lower edge of the fenders and doors. Please refer to the close-up images. The white convertible top looks nice but doesn’t sit quite right at the rear side edges, where a gap has formed. Please see the pictures. There are two paint chips on the sides of the handle on the front hood. See the image.
-
General condition
The overall impression is good, and it runs smoothly. In Sweden, you don’t often see these late convertibles on the roads.

Facts about the model
The VW 1303 debuted in 1973 and was a thoroughly updated model of the Beetle. It featured a curved windshield, a new dashboard, front disc brakes, MacPherson strut front suspension, IRS rear suspension, and more, making it also the most expensive to build. After 1974, it also featured rack-and-pinion steering. The car sold well in 1973 and 1974, but interest declined afterward. The VW Golf, introduced in 1974, sold so well that VW decided to cease production of the 1303 in 1975. However, the simpler 1200 and 1300 models continued to be built in many other countries, including Finland, Croatia, South Africa, Mexico, and Brazil, with the old body style featuring a flat windshield and the old suspension and engine, serving as budget cars (“spark beetles”). The simpler 1200/1300 models were produced until August 2003, by which time over 21 million Beetles had been built.
The 1303 Cabriolet was manufactured under license by Karman in Osnabruck, and in its final years, it was produced exclusively for the USA market. Sold under the name “Superbeetle,” the last ones were delivered in the spring of 1980.
