"The driving experience—shifting into drive with the push of a button in the center of the steering wheel—still feels futuristic. The car runs smoothly and calmly in both engine and transmission. The bias-ply tires offer a unique feel on country roads, requiring some adjustment for drivers used to modern cars. This is a road-ready classic that doesn’t need any immediate attention."

Description

A stylish, road-ready Edsel Pacer from the very first model year. Edsel was offered in four trim levels: the base model Ranger, followed by the Pacer, then the Corsair, and at the top of the line, the Citation. The current owner purchased this car in 2014 and has driven it only sparingly since. He owned a similar car in his youth and bought this one as a nostalgic throwback.

The car was imported to Sweden in 1996 and has since undergone restoration. The exact timeline of the restoration is unknown, but it likely took place during the 2000s. The car is equipped with a U.S.-spec miles odometer, with an approved exemption. The exact mileage is not known.

The hood has proven difficult to latch fully—an adjustment and tightening of the locking pin on the hood side is needed.

Included with the car are the owner’s manual, a steering lock/anti-theft bar, a spare wheel, and a jack.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Equipped with the E400 V8 engine, displacing 361 cubic inches (5.9L) and rated at 303 horsepower. It features a 3-speed automatic transmission operated via Teletouch push-buttons located in the center of the steering wheel. The engine and transmission run smoothly. There is a small exhaust leak identified at the right-side manifold.

  • Interior condition:

Very nice interior, replaced during the restoration. Fitted with an AutoMeter temperature gauge. The fabric carpet shows some sun fading. The trunk area is clean and well-kept.

  • Exterior condition:

Nicely restored condition. The paintwork has a few stone chips, a minor blemish, and some small bubbles along one of the rocker panels. Chrome and trim are in good condition, with one grille half showing some pitting in the cast chrome—see photos for details. Equipped with B.F. Goodrich bias-ply tires, modern reproductions with the correct period look. A visual inspection of the underside, without access to a lift, indicated it to be in very good condition.

  • General condition:

A clean and well-presented example of the Edsel, which in 1958 featured what was then the most controversial and criticized grille design of its time. Ready to hit the road for car shows and exhibitions.

Facts about the model

When Edsel was introduced on September 4, 1957, it came in four model series plus a separate range of station wagons. The most affordable series was the Ranger, followed by the Pacer. Both were built on a chassis with a 299.8 cm wheelbase.

The most distinctive feature of all 1958 Edsel models was the vertical grille—tapered at the bottom and framed with dual chrome surrounds. This design choice resulted in a split front bumper. Undeniably bold, it prioritized form over function. The vulnerable center section lacked protection, and a standard mounting position for the front license plate was not possible. This was resolved by placing the plate below the left headlight pair—a location that significantly detracted from the car’s front-end styling. As a result, nearly all Edsel advertisements featured the car without a front license plate.

While the front design stirred controversy, the rear was nearly as daring—yet widely praised. The rear end was easily identifiable by its large, horizontal taillights with downward-angled inner points.

The 1958 Edsel’s styling clearly aimed to break new ground. The bodywork featured numerous details carefully designed to stand out, a level of attention that extended to the interior. All instruments and controls were neatly arranged in front of the driver, with a speedometer consisting of a rotating numeric drum behind a fixed pointer.

In Sweden, Edsel was sold new, with around 30 examples of the 1958 model year arriving in the country. (Only 10 units of the 1959 model were sold in Sweden.) Many of these have been scrapped over the years, but since the mid-1970s, a small number have been imported as collector cars.

Interestingly, Edsel seems to be more appreciated in Sweden than in its native United States. This could be because the car remains a sensitive topic in the U.S.—during the just over two years it was produced, Ford lost at least $200 million on the Edsel project. That dramatic failure has now made the Ford Edsel a highly sought-after collector’s item—at least here in Scandinavia.
