"If you want the opportunity to use and preserve an authentic people’s car, this is the car for you. It is inspection-exempt and tax-free, which is a bonus when taking care of a vehicle that is part of Sweden’s rolling cultural heritage. It needs a new ignition lock for safety, but otherwise, it is ready to drive."

Description

The car was registered on December 15, 1947, and has had six registered owners. From the accompanying registration documents, we know that the car was in Dalarna County, where it had the registration number W13155. In 1966, the then-owner, Mr. Skott, lived in Stockholm, and the car was assigned the registration number AA55705.

For those who want to uncover the full history, you will need to visit the Swedish archives.

The current owner is a young, technology-interested woman who, after owning the car for four years, has only been able to use it sparingly. She feels she does not have the time for her collector’s vehicle and is therefore letting Bilweb Auctions sell it for her.

One important thing to note is that the car only has original trafficators. This is approved by the Swedish vehicle inspection, but modern drivers often miss when the arm is deployed. An update with small, discreet indicator lights is recommended for safer driving in modern traffic conditions.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

Volvo’s durable B4B engine with 1.4 liters and 40 hp. The transmission is the original 3-speed with an unsynchronized low gear. Starts easily and runs nicely with the classic Volvo sound. These older vehicles with an unsynchronized 1st gear require a relaxed and harmonious driving style. The car is fully functional and ready to drive. It has a 6-volt electrical system with a new starter battery. The starter motor has been rebuilt and the solenoid replaced because there were occasional clicks in the starter motor. As a result, the ignition switch has been bypassed. Now the problem seems to be solved, and all that remains is to install a new ignition switch. (The car starts and can be test-driven without the ignition switch until it is fixed.)

Equipped with a heating unit, which was actually an option when the PV 444 was introduced. New exhaust system. Fitted with older bias-ply tires that give the car the right profile; these have dried out and should be replaced in the long run for safety reasons.

  • Interior condition

The interior is very nice. We believe it was renovated in the 1980s. The interior was done in the correct colors and was given some extra attention with button-tufted seats. It is neatly and properly done. There is only minor wear on the driver’s seat, with a small hole on the side of the backrest. A new headliner was also installed at the same time. The ignition switch is in place but has been bypassed with a toggle switch and start button. It needs to be replaced. See pictures. The small window crank for the left ventilation window has come off and is included loose; it’s nothing unusual but needs some attention.

  • Exterior condition

Older repaint done in the 1980s, which is in typical used condition. It has stood the test of time well. There is a rust spot on the left front fender, just at the rear edge, at the bottom of the radio antenna. It appears to be limited to that area. See the pictures. The bumpers are very nice and were likely re-chromed in the 1980s.

  • General condition

A charming Swedish-made classic car that leaves a good overall impression for the model. Not in mint condition, but very well-maintained and in a usable, functional state. A true grandfather’s car that was used for both special occasions and everyday life during the transition between the 1940s and 1950s.

Facts about the model

The new Volvo PV 444 model was first unveiled in 1943, but it took nearly four years before production began (due to the war, material shortages, etc.). By the time of the unveiling, more than 5,000 pre-orders had been placed by enthusiastic buyers. There was a car shortage in Sweden, and the PV was modern, affordable, and durable. The car became a sales success that lasted until 1966, with improvements each year.

In the first three years, 1947-1950, all models delivered were registered as 1947 models in the vehicle registry. All these cars were black on the outside and had the nice light green and beige interior. In 1950, more colors were introduced, and the interior was adjusted accordingly.
