"When the era of massive grilles and fins waned at the turn of the 50s and 60s, American cars also adopted a more restrained and compact design. This car from the mid-60s is a fine representative of that time. Its color combination and condition make it a pleasant convertible and cruiser. It doesn’t roar “here I come,” but it exudes dignity and harmony, speaking gently to its surroundings."

Description

This car was registered in Sweden in July 1987. The most recent owner acquired it in July 1999. He was a well-known enthusiast and figure in the motor hobby scene for many decades, having started building Hot Rods back in the 50s. In his work, he was known for building roll bars, but he had comprehensive knowledge in racing, motor mechanics, and always took excellent care of his cars.

Among other things, he had Danielssons Bilcenter AB refurbish the automatic transmission and replace the radiator in 2013. The power steering was also refurbished. The car was repainted by Norlings and received new upholstery and a soft top from Alfa Bilklädsel.

The car comes with various documentation and receipts.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Starts easily and the engine and other mechanics sound fine. There was no opportunity for a full test drive, but during a short drive around the yard, everything seemed to function well. As with all vehicles that have been stationary for a while, an inspection is recommended. It has not been checked on a lift, but what could be seen gave a robust and good impression.

  • Interior condition:

The interior is in good original condition with reupholstered seats. The door panels, dashboard, carpets, and instruments are in fine shape with a bit of patina. There is a newer stereo, but it has not been tested.

  • Exterior condition:

Glossy and fine paintwork. Chrome, glass, lighting, and emblem details are in good condition. Nice newer soft top with well-functioning electric operation. Good wheels with nice spoke hubcaps, though there is a damaged “center spinner” on the driver’s side front. Good tires.

  • General condition:

Despite being a compact car from that era, mid-60s vehicles had started to grow in size, and this one can be considered a midsize car. With its sympathetic and slightly exclusive look, this 60-year-old vehicle is a representative car from its time and the Ford Motor Company, making it a fine classic and enthusiast car.

Facts about the model

Mercury became a new brand under Ford in 1938. They wanted a vehicle positioned between Ford and Lincoln that could compete with Buick and Oldsmobile, which sat between Chevrolet and Cadillac at main competitor GM. By the late 1950s, when Ford had the new Edsel on the horizon, they decided to push Mercury up the value chain closer to Lincoln. Much of the design and various details reflected the “space and rocket age” the world was in at the time. The cars were indeed generously equipped with lots of chrome.

By the end of the 1950s, things didn’t go as well for Ford, partly due to the flop of the new Edsel model. Meanwhile, the craze for chrome and fins had reached its peak, and relatively quickly, car production shifted to a more streamlined and compact design. The compact model Comet, which had been developed by the Edsel division that was shut down in the fall of 1959, was then made a standalone model. From the 1962 model year, it became part of the Mercury lineup. All remnants of the Edsel era were removed, and the Comet became a success that Ford needed.

In the era of compact cars, they had hit the mark. For the 1964 model year, the second generation featured an upgraded version with a boxier look, sharing some elements with the new Ford Falcon model. Mercury introduced a version of the Comet called Caliente, which featured more chrome, decorations, and various optional extras. For the 1965 model year, further upgrades were made, including dual vertical headlights. The cars were powered by straight-six engines and V8s, with either a four-speed manual transmission or a three-speed automatic Merc-O-Matic.

During this time, models were constantly being updated, so by the 1966 model year, the third generation brought additional innovations. The Caliente version disappeared when the fourth generation was introduced for the 1968 model year. This ushered in a new naming convention within the model lineup.
