Volvo 850 Racing T5 — 1992

An almost semi-works racer. This might just be the lowest known chassis number of any running Volvo 850 in existence. Built on a rare pre-production shell, it’s packed with exclusive goodies from Volvo’s top-secret development department and engine lab. And as if that wasn’t enough, it even comes with a dash of royal flair—yes, this one been driven by the King.

"It proudly wears the marks of many years spent in action at Mantorp Park—a true track veteran. While it shows signs of use, it was solidly built from the beginning and has been carefully maintained throughout its active life."

Description

The car was built in 1995 by Johnny Haraldsson of Sportpromotion in Halmstad, using an early hand-welded pre-production shell as its foundation. Volvo contributed three prototype/test T5R cars as donor vehicles for the project. Lightweight metal—identical to what was used in the Super Touring cars—was chosen for the front fenders to reduce weight.

The engine was sourced directly from Volvo’s engine test lab. Although its exact specifications remain partly undocumented, it’s fitted with a sharper camshaft, a larger Garrett 19-inch turbocharger, and a factory-programmed ECU. An adjustable wastegate is set to 1.2 bar of boost, with an estimated output of around 320 horsepower.

Several unique features hint at the car’s early development history. It wears T-Gul bumpers, with a yellow tow hook arrow revealing the original color beneath. The car was repainted in the iconic T5R red—a full year before the public launch of the color later known as "T-Röd." It was pre-registered and imported by Volvo Cars in 1992. Although it was never issued a registration number, the vehicle is documented in the Swedish Transport Agency’s historical records.

Adding to its provenance, the car was, on a few occasions, driven by HM King Carl XVI Gustaf—an avid car enthusiast—during exclusive test events.

The car has been virtually stored in a garage for over five years. It was a bit dusty when photographed, but the seller will have it fully cleaned and polished before delivery. One major advantage: the car has never been driven on public roads or in winter conditions, meaning there are no rust issues. The rubber seals—especially around the roof rails—are still soft, complete, and free from cracking.

Originally built for the track and raced in the 850 Turbo series, this car has mainly been used for track days and passenger ride-alongs at Mantorp Park. Impressively, it still retains its original dashboard and fully functioning instruments. The electric windows are operational, with the control switches neatly relocated to the glovebox.

The current owner believes it’s possible to road register the car. To do so, it would require standard seatbelts, carpeting, and a rear exhaust section. The estimated cost for parts and the registration process is approximately 20,000–25,000 SEK. The car is already fitted with a catalytic converter, and all lights and indicators are fully functional.

As a buyer, you have two great options: keep it as a dedicated track day car, or go through the process of road registration—turning it into an absolute beast for the street. Under hard acceleration, it’s powerful enough to spin the rear wheels even in fourth gear. The car has been well looked after throughout its active life.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The car starts instantly and runs smoothly, with a stable engine and strong performance during the test drive. Gear shifts are precise, handling feels confident, and the brakes are solid. The timing belt was last replaced eight years ago and has seen minimal mileage since, but a precautionary replacement—along with a new water pump and routine service—should be factored in. The engine bay is clean and well-kept, with the original fuel tank now refitted. It rides on a set of attractive alloy wheels that show some scratches, and it’s currently fitted with older but still usable tires.

  • Interior condition:

Interior is stripped-down and purpose-built—exactly what you’d expect from a serious race-focused car. It’s fitted with Momo seats, full six-point harnesses, and a special Heico roll cage. The original sunroof has been replaced with a metal panel for added structural rigidity.

Surprisingly, the car still retains its original dashboard, complete with cruise control, heater and blower, trip computer, and functioning electric windows (with the switches now relocated to the glovebox—see picture). The display shows some pixelation but remains fully readable and usable.

  • Exterior condition:

Bodywork is remarkably straight, with no signs of major damage—just a few light dents on the rear wheel arches. Most importantly, there are no rust issues. The underbody is also clean and solid, showing only light surface rust on some suspension components. The paintwork is clean and presentable, with some minor scratches and scuffs in places. There are small cracks in the front lower spoiler, as well as a minor paint crack where the sunroof was replaced with a metal panel (see pictures).

  • General condition:

It’s not every day you get the chance to own something like this—so here’s your opportunity. Whether you keep it as a thrilling track day toy or take it down the road registration route, one thing’s for sure: you’ll be grinning from ear to ear every time you hit the gas pedal.
