"A well-maintained 245."

Description

The current owner purchased the car in 2019. He had grown up with a nearly identical red 245 some 20 years earlier. He chose this particular example because it was more or less rust-free, having spent most of its life in the northern parts of Sweden where roads are less salty.

Unfortunately, much of the mechanical components turned out to be in significantly worse condition than expected, and the car became something of a rolling project. The same was true for the interior – it was clearly a well-used daily driver.

Over the years, the owner has addressed most of the issues:

All bushings were replaced, along with control arms, various rear suspension links, shock absorbers, and springs

The strut housings were sandblasted and painted

The entire braking system was replaced or refurbished

Worn-out headlights and taillights were replaced or restored

The rear hatch wiring was replaced

A newer-style windshield was installed

The driver's seat was restored, and all broken interior parts were replaced with new, NOS, or better-condition used components. A new headliner was installed in summer 2024. Equipment was also upgraded with an original cruise control kit and a better OEM stereo with amplifier and four (modern) 4-inch speakers, all installed in factory positions.

The engine was removed and underwent a partial rebuild. All gaskets were replaced, along with new ignition components and injectors. All coolant hoses were swapped, the engine block repainted, and new belts, water pump, and clutch installed. A leaking power steering pressure hose was replaced, as well as the driveshaft flex disc, center support bearing, and gear shifter bushings. A leaking gearbox output seal was also replaced. The damaged plastic undertray parts were swapped for new ones.

What's left to make this a truly excellent 245 is a respray. As it stands, the car looks nice from a few meters away, but up close there are numerous stone chips from its 300,000 km of use, a few minor door dings and dents, and some surface rust where chips have gone through the primer.

The car has mostly been driven during summer for pleasure trips, but also for commuting and a few longer journeys. A set of studded winter tires in good condition is included separately. Two sets of keys. No service book.

Facts about the model

Sweden’s best-selling car model! The Volvo 240 is known for its safety, somewhat unexciting driving characteristics, and near-indestructibility.

In 1984, all fuel-injected variants – GLT, GLE, and Turbo – received a facelift with a raised hood and black grille. After 1985, the model range was streamlined; for example, the two-door version was discontinued as Volvo shifted focus to the newly launched Volvo 740, intended to take over as the main volume model.

Production didn’t end until 1993, when space was needed for the Volvo 850. The final Volvo 240 – a green estate – rolled off the line on May 5, 1993.

Ten years after production ended, the 240 was still the second most common Volvo on Swedish roads.
