Description

This Beetle was originally sold new in the USA. It was imported to Sweden in the year 2000 and underwent a renovation before being put into traffic in Sweden in 2002. During the import, the American speedometer was replaced with one calibrated in kilometers. It currently shows 15,222 kilometers. The car has recently passed the inspection at Bilprovningen (the Swedish Vehicle Inspection Authority) and is approved until April 30, 2025. The current owner purchased the car in April 2023 but is now selling it due to health reasons. The car comes with an American instruction manual, Swedish brochures, a jack, a tool kit, and a spare wheel.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

This car is equipped with an air-cooled 1600cc flat-four engine, featuring dual Weber carburetors and a 4-speed manual transmission. The stated power output is 50 horsepower. The car was originally delivered with a fuel-injected engine, but the current engine is manufactured before 1979 according to the engine code. The car starts easily and runs smoothly without any abnormal sounds. These later Type 1 models are equipped with a more modern front suspension system known as MacPherson suspension, which provides a firmer and more stable ride. Technically, the car is fully functional.

  • Interior condition:

The interior looks like new, with the only remark being a few small marks on the lower left rear section of the headliner. Please refer to the provided picture. The car is equipped with a sports steering wheel, and the original steering wheel is included separately. It also comes with some nice accessories, such as the original radio with VW emblem on the buttons, a storage compartment on the dashboard, and a manual trip meter. Additionally, a wind deflector and an unused luggage shelf are included separately. Please refer to the pictures for more details.

  • Exterior condition:

The car has been professionally repainted with excellent results. There is a small mark on the engine hood where the previous owner accidentally dropped the license plate while trying to mount it. The result is similar to a small stone chip, as shown in the picture. The convertible top was replaced during the renovation and is still in great condition.

  • General condition:

The car is in showroom condition and conveys a sense of being brand new.

Facts about the model

The VW 1303S was the top model in the development of the "VW Beetle" and the last German-manufactured Volkswagen model. The 1303 was produced in Wolfsburg between 1973 and 1975. After that, from 1980 onwards, these cars were only built as convertible models under license at Karman in Osnabrück. From 1977 to 1979, they were only sold in the USA, equipped with a fuel-injected engine producing 60 horsepower.

The VW 1303 was introduced in 1973 and was a thoroughly refined and updated model of the Beetle. It featured a curved windshield, a new dashboard, front disc brakes, MacPherson front suspension, independent rear suspension (IRS), and more, which also made it the most expensive Beetle model to build. After 1974, it also had rack-and-pinion steering. The car sold well in 1973 and 1974, but interest declined thereafter. The introduction of the VW Golf in 1974 was a huge success, and in 1975, VW decided to stop producing the 1303. However, the simpler 1200 and 1300 models continued to be built in many other countries, such as Finland, Croatia, South Africa, Mexico, Brazil, and more. These models retained the old body style with a flat windshield and the older suspension and engine, serving as budget-friendly options (known as "Sparkäfer"). The simpler 1200/1300 models were built until August 2003, and by then, more than 21 million Beetles had been produced.

The 1303 Cabriolet was manufactured under license by Karman in Osnabrück and, in its final years, exclusively for the US market. They were sold under the name "Super Beetle," and the last ones were delivered in the spring of 1980.
