"In very sound overall condition — and on top of that, a tough model regarded as one of the finest cars of the muscle car era."

Description

Imported in 1977, at a time when US car imports to Sweden had really taken off. This car was originally delivered from the Norwood factory in Azure Turquoise with black stripes, a black soft top, and a black deluxe interior. The engine is a 327, and according to receipts, it was rebuilt in 1983. At the same time, a modified TH350 transmission was installed. It has remained within the same owner family since 1987.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

The original 327 engine with a four-barrel carburetor is still fitted. The engine runs very well, with a smooth and steady idle and excellent throttle response, with no noticeable issues. According to receipts, a modified TH350 automatic transmission was installed in the car in 1984, and it is assumed to still be in place. Gear changes and kickdown function exactly as they should. Whether any additional engine modifications, tuning work, or rear axle upgrades have been carried out is unknown. Visible changes include aftermarket valve covers, headers, and other engine-bay details.

On the downside, a leaking exhaust manifold gasket was noted during the test drive — something that sounds quite loud on an engine like this, but is relatively simple to fix. There is also some noise from the power steering at full steering lock.

The car is equipped with drum brakes all around. Features include power steering, power brakes, a power-operated convertible top, and lap belts. Everything essential functions properly, and the brakes operate evenly and effectively. It is clear that the focus has been more on chassis and driving dynamics than cosmetic perfection, with attention given to suspension components, tires, and reinforcement bars underneath the car.

On the road, the car behaves very well, with responsive and precise steering and a composed, compliant feel through corners. Simply put, it offers a very enjoyable driving experience.

  • Interior condition

The upholstery is in good condition, with some minor wear. It features the correct trim for the Deluxe Interior option package. Originally, the car should also have been fitted with a two-spoke steering wheel, but this has been replaced. A small crack is visible on the upper edge of the passenger seat, while the door panels are in nice condition overall, with some wear at the lower section of the driver’s door.

An aftermarket temperature gauge has been neatly installed on the center console. The original lap belts are still in place. The speedometer face is somewhat faded and was likely modified when the car arrived in Sweden to include kilometer markings. Whether the trip meter (still in miles) is accurate is impossible to determine.

Overall, the interior presents in generally good condition for its age. There are some loose wiring harnesses visible beneath the dashboard, along with a couple of aftermarket switches of unknown function — in other words, fairly typical for a car of this kind.

  • Exterior condition

The car still wore its original paint when it arrived in Sweden, but was later repainted in its current red color — an attractive shade in its own right, especially when combined with the white soft top.

The wheel wells still show traces of a bygone 1980s era in the form of white paint, and the same applies to the underside. At its core, this is an older garage-quality repaint that has been touched up over the years, with runs, color variations, and similar imperfections present. The trunk lid differs slightly in shade and has developed some filler blistering.

The soft top is intact, watertight, and in generally good condition, although it has become somewhat weathered with age. The wheels are in very fine condition and fitted with good tires. The grille, plastic trim, and other details are all in good shape. As this is a base Camaro with minimal exterior trim, it does not feature the chrome moldings around the body contours ahead of the rear wheels.

  • General condition

In good driver-quality condition — or perhaps more accurately, enthusiast-grade condition. A car with many boxes properly ticked. First and foremost, it is a convertible 1969 Camaro, paired with the appealing combination of a lively, high-revving 327 engine and the durable TH350 automatic transmission. That carries far more weight than the various minor shortcomings mentioned above.
