"Thanks to the extensive work done on this Volvo 1800s, it runs and drives exceptionally well. What truly sets it apart is the installation of a K cam and a Weber 32/36 carburetor, with the original new double SU carburetor included. These upgrades give the car a sportier feel and an enhanced sound. While it may need slight adjustments after a few more miles of driving due to its limited use post-renovation, it is inspection exempt forever and ready to drive home."

Description

The owner, a classic car enthusiast with extensive knowledge of Mercedes cars, always fancied a Volvo 1800. In 2021, he purchased this one from BWA. Imported from Los Angeles, the car had no major rust issues, making it an ideal candidate for renovation. The restoration began in late 2021, starting with a complete disassembly of the car down to the nuts and bolts, followed by finding professionals with the expertise needed for the project.

The bodywork was meticulously straightened and welded, despite having no major rust issues, ensuring it was perfect before being repainted in the original 091 Light Green by Auto Rikt in Arvika. The engine was inspected and found to have a bored cylinder to a B20 and a K cam. With good compression, the valves were polished, and the engine was rebuilt with new gaskets and parts. The gearbox and overdrive were renovated, and the rear axle was upgraded to a 3.73 ratio, making it more pleasant to drive and better suited to the speedometer in km/h. All electrical components were renovated, and new brakes, a fuel system, exhaust, and suspension parts, including new bushes, were installed. No detail was overlooked.

Upon completing the renovation this year, the mileage was reset to zero. The interior underwent a full renovation, with the dashboard reupholstered in leather, a new headliner, door cards, and carpets installed, and the original seats cleaned and refitted. On the exterior, new chrome trims were fitted while retaining the original bumpers and grills to preserve the car's charm without making it feel over-restored.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

This Volvo 1800s is easy to start, with a smooth-running engine that feels more nimble thanks to the K cam and Weber carburetor, producing approximately 135 hp. The gearshift is smooth, and the overdrive functions perfectly, complemented by good brakes and excellent road handling with no unwanted noises. While nothing needs fixing, some adjustments might be needed after driving a few more hundred kilometers. The car features renovated steel wheels with shiny chrome hubcaps and new tires.

  • Interior condition:

The interior is in top condition, blending new and original elements to create a comfortable and inviting atmosphere. The dashboard has been reupholstered in leather and features nice gauges along with an older, non-working radio that adds to the vintage charm. Notably, the fuel gauge works if you tap the glass, and the oil temperature meter can be a bit hard to read.

  • Exterior condition:

Bodywork is in great condition, featuring well-fitting panels and nicely finished sills. The passenger doors may require a minor alignment due to the newer, slightly thicker seals compared to the old ones, but this can be adjusted after some use. The underbody is neat, showing signs of the renovation on the floor. There is a small dent on the chrome trim near the rear window and pitting on the chrome of the rear lights and boot lid handle. The chrome bumpers are in good condition with some age-related wear.

  • General condition:

These cars are expensive to renovate, and even a project car can cost around 100,000 kr to buy. Considering the substantial amount of money and time invested in this Volvo 1800s, it's much more cost-effective for the buyer to purchase a fully renovated one like this rather than undertaking the restoration themselves. This car promises plenty of years of trouble-free motoring ahead for the new owner.
