Description

A charming and beloved 1957 Volkswagen Beetle. This Beetle has been resting in a barn loft since 2003. We should be grateful for our well-ventilated Swedish barns and lofts, where there has been space to store our classic cars. In the rest of Europe, the situation has been different, with limited storage space and bureaucratic hassle to keep a car off the road. Now, the demand for Sweden’s classic cars has been discovered, and many are being sold to the continent, especially Beetles. So, if you, as an enthusiast, want to keep the car in Sweden, you should seize the opportunity.

The lady who owns the car is named Inger, and she bought it in 1989. She tells us it was her first own car. The family lived in Umeå and had a small summer cottage by Idbyfjärden. The Beetle was used mostly for summer trips between home and the summer cottage, a car ride of just over an hour. One concern was that the car lacked seat belts, and the ride along the E4 could feel a bit scary with all the fast-moving traffic. Inger recalls asking her 5-year-old son to lie down in the back seat and sleep during the trip. He usually did, and it felt a bit safer when the son was still and not moving around. The car ride was then taken at a leisurely pace. Faster vehicles would maintain their speed and pass by. The Beetle was also used to transport drinking water between the gas station and the sparsely equipped summer cottage. A 20-liter water jug fit perfectly on the floor in front of the passenger seat.

In 2003, the car received some rust remarks from the Swedish Vehicle Inspection. Inger took the car in, and the damages were repaired. The car was then inspected again and approved. It was then stored in the barn loft as usual in October. But the next year, it didn’t come out again. It was outcompeted by a Volvo 343, which was more modern and safer in traffic. Inger says she didn’t have the heart to sell her beloved Beetle. It was left to rest in the loft. Now, over 20 years later, she feels it’s time to let the car come out and bring joy to a new owner. The Beetle has received a new 6-volt starter battery, two new tires, a new brake hose, and a basic start-up check. It starts easily and rolls smoothly. The handbrake is good, and the foot brake is somewhat functional. It’s enough for a test drive and easy movement with a car transporter. The odometer reads 69,650 kilometers. We don’t know if this is the total mileage or possibly 169,650 kilometers.

All numbers suggest the car is matching numbers. According to the body number, the body was manufactured in April 1957. According to the engine number, the engine was manufactured in May 1957. In summary, the same owner for 35 years, of which the last 20 years have been stored off-road. Once the car has been thoroughly inspected and passed its final inspection at the vehicle testing station, it will be exempt from further inspections and tax-free according to Swedish vintage car regulations.
