Description

In January 1970, this Volvo 1800 E was sold to a man in Gustavsberg, just outside Stockholm. The current owner bought it 22 years ago; according to him, it was repainted in the late 1990s.

The 1970 model year made the 1800 line more modern. Volvo’s GT car received fuel injection, rear disc brakes, and a new dashboard with wood?grain trim that fit perfectly with the decade’s design aesthetic.

Despite the paint’s age, this 1800 E still holds its style. It runs well, and the overdrive gearbox keeps engine revs low even at higher speeds.

A large number of inspection reports accompany the car, which is fully approved for road use. Receipts for spare-parts purchases and repairs span many years, and the vehicle’s original registration document is still with it.

A retro-style radio is installed, and behind the passenger seat there’s a CD changer. At present the system only plays CDs, as no radio antenna has been fitted. Speakers are mounted in the doors, and two loose speakers sit in the back seat.

The odometer reads 25,730 km. Two sets of keys are provided. On the inside of the trunk lid, P1800’s designer Pelle Petterson has left his autograph.

A Volvo 1800 is always beautiful, and with a few simple touches this example could be taken to even greater heights—things like re-chroming the bumpers, replacing a missing mudflap, and restoring the grille’s matte-black finish.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The heater fan, windshield wipers, and lighting all function properly. The owner reports that the engine underwent a major overhaul several years ago, including the fitting of new piston rings. The exhaust system has been replaced with stainless steel. The ignition has been converted to a breakerless system, and as a result the tachometer no longer works. The clock is also non-functional, and the fuel gauge reads in reverse—empty when full and full when empty. A new float to resolve the fuel-gauge issue is included with the sale, along with a number of other spare parts: a chromed valve cover, a new rubber seal for the luggage compartment, replacement fuel injectors, and an overdrive solenoid.

  • Interior condition:

The black leather upholstery is inviting and generally in good condition; there is some wear on the left side of the driver’s seatback. A modern CD player is mounted in the dashboard, and two loose speakers sit in the rear seat. The mats are somewhat stained but will likely look much better with a good cleaning.

  • Exterior condition:

The boot lid and hood have slightly uneven alignment with the body, and a mud flap is missing. The paint is nonetheless glossy; the front wings each show a couple of small soft dents, and there’s a tiny dent on the side moulding. The right door was repainted at some point, but no colour difference is visible to the eye. The grille is worn and missing its emblem, and the badge that should sit in front of the bonnet is also absent. The bumpers show poor chrome.

  • General condition:

A Volvo classic ready for the road that, with simple measures, its new owner could lift to an even more refined condition.

Facts about the model

One of Sweden’s most beloved car models is truly a European at heart. When Volvo set out to create a sports car, it was to feature Italian styling, so they commissioned the Italian design house Frua. The story of how Volvo long refused to acknowledge that it was young Swede Pelle Petterson who had penned the body is well known. Production might even have taken place in West Germany—Gothenburg lacked the capacity—but when the model was unveiled in May 1961, it was announced that the bodies would be built by Pressed Steel in Scotland and assembled by Jensen in England.

Gradually, through the 1960s, the model became a thoroughly Swedish affair. From 1963 assembly was moved to Volvo’s Lundby factory in Gothenburg, and the name changed from P1800 to 1800 S. In the winter of 1968–1969 body production was brought home to Svenska Stålpressnings AB in Olofström. From the 1969 model year, the 1800 S also received the new B20 engine.

The next major innovation arrived the following year: the 1800 E abandoned twin carburetors in favor of electronic fuel injection—the “E” standing simply for Electronic. With Bosch injection, output rose from 118 hp SAE to 130 hp SAE. The 1970 model year also saw the new M410 gearbox, rear disc brakes, a matte?black grille, headrests, new wheels, and a dashboard with wood-grain trim.

A little belatedly, the 1800 line gained a new body version in autumn 1971: the 1800 ES, a shooting-brake design with an all-glass tailgate. The last 1800 E cars rolled off the line in summer 1972, and a year later production of the 1800 ES ended as well. In total, Volvo built 47 855 examples of the P1800, 1800 S, 1800 E, and 1800 ES, according to company statistics.
