"A charming and usable 1930s vehicle."

Description

In 2004, the current owner imported this Chevrolet pickup from the United States. A copy of the original U.S. title shows that it was previously registered in Costa Mesa, California. At that time, the truck was in poor condition, and over the following four years the owner personally restored it. (One photograph of the truck before the restoration and three photographs taken during the restoration are included in the image gallery.)

The body was lifted from the chassis during the restoration, and the truck was fitted with a slightly larger 235 cu in Chevrolet inline-six engine from 1955. The four-speed manual transmission was already installed when the truck was purchased and is believed to have been an optional factory upgrade, as the standard specification was a three-speed gearbox.

The owner has made several discreet upgrades to improve the truck's usability while preserving its classic appearance. These include Toyota Prius power steering, an electric windshield wiper motor replacing the original vacuum-operated system, an electric cooling fan, radial tyres in place of the original cross-ply tyres, mounted on period-correct steel wheels from a 1940s Chevrolet, a 12-volt electrical system instead of the original 6-volt setup, and gas-filled shock absorbers replacing the original lever-arm dampers. The truck has also been fitted with a chrome rear bumper and turn indicators all around.

It is equipped with a tow hitch and, following its Swedish registration inspection, was approved with a maximum towing capacity of 1,500 kg.

An American-style trunk mounted in the cargo bed is included with the sale, along with the owner's manual. Two sets of keys are also included.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

The truck starts easily and runs well, with both the engine and gearbox performing as they should. All electrical equipment, including the lights, windshield wipers, and heater fan, is in working order, and no unusual noises were detected during the test drive.

The only known issues are that the fuel gauge is inoperative and the speedometer does not display the correct speed.

  • Interior condition

The interior is in good condition, featuring a tidy vinyl bench seat. Both the seat upholstery and the headliner were reupholstered during the restoration 20 years ago. A modern radio/CD player is discreetly mounted beneath the seat, with two speakers installed under the dashboard. The passenger-side window occasionally requires slight manual guidance when being wound up.

  • Exterior condition

The maroon and black paintwork, applied during the restoration, remains in good condition. There are no obvious signs of damage such as dents or scratches. The only exception is the tailgate, which has a few scratches in the cargo area—a reminder that the truck has been used as intended.

  • General condition

A beautifully restored 1930s classic that has been made more practical through a number of subtle, almost invisible upgrades. There are no known issues requiring immediate attention—the Chevy is ready to be driven and enjoyed by its next owner.

Facts about the model

The 1936 model year introduced several important improvements for Chevrolet's FB-series pickups. Hydraulic brakes became standard equipment, and the cab was now constructed entirely of steel. The redesigned dashboard closely resembled those found in Chevrolet's passenger cars of the period. As expected, the truck featured rear-wheel drive, body-on-frame construction, and was powered by a 3.4-litre overhead-valve inline-six engine producing 79 horsepower.

These improvements may well have contributed to the model's success. For the first time, Chevrolet registered sales of 200,000 trucks in a single year.
