"Ready-made Volvo 245 Turbo. A timing belt replacement and regular service are recommended. A suitable task for the next owner will be to replace the side trims with completely black ones."

Description

Volvo 245 was the world's first estate car with a turbocharger when it was first introduced. Here we have a well-maintained example from the 1984 model year. According to information from the Swedish Transport Agency, there are currently only 328 registered Volvo 245s with a turbocharger remaining in the vehicle registry.

The previous owner addressed the rust issues on the car, and the current owner had it repainted in the original light green color. The owner is now letting the car go, as they have fulfilled their dream of owning a truly fine 245 Turbo. According to the odometer reading, the car has covered just over 25,000 Swedish miles. After examining the accompanying older inspection reports, the mileage appears to be likely accurate.

The original instruction manual, as well as a complete folder with receipts for parts and older inspection reports, are included. A spare wheel, jack, and tools shown in the pictures are also included.

The car will be delivered with a valid inspection certificate from the Swedish Vehicle Inspection Authority (Bilprovningen).

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Equipped with the B21 ET Turbo engine, which Volvo stated to have 155 horsepower. The transmission is the M46 model with overdrive. It starts easily and sounds right. A new exhaust system has been installed.

Technically, it is functioning normally. It is getting close to the time to replace the timing belt, not due to mileage, but because of its age. The last replacement was noted in 2012.

  • Interior condition:

The seat upholstery is a neatly fitted cover made of fabric and artificial leather, newly manufactured by the classic car upholstery manufacturer Pebe, commissioned by the car owner. (Pebe still had the original templates from the 1980s). According to the owner, the original upholstery underneath the cover is worn. The dashboard has remained without cracks. It has the correct steering wheel with the turbo emblem and a leather gaiter for the gear lever. Both the headliner and door panels are in good condition. Please refer to the attached images. The plastic front door pockets are missing.

  • Exterior condition:

The car was fully repainted approximately 2 years ago in a nice original color. The side moldings are supposed to be all-black and are easy to replace.

It is equipped with the correct classic turbo alloy wheels. On the undersides of the doors and in the door openings, there are visible traces of the metal repairs that were done when the car was prepared. Please refer to the attached images. The undercarriage is in good condition.

  • General condition:

Stylish and well-maintained Volvo Turbo that evokes desire. Few remarks and overall in good condition.

Facts about the model

When the Saab 900 Turbo achieved great success, Volvo also felt compelled to develop a turbocharged version of its 240, despite already having a V6 engine with the same power. The turbo model in the wagon version was, of course, the most expensive performance model of Volvo's family car, the 245. The launch took place in the USA in 1980, and the first cars were sold as the 242 for the 1981 model year.

The following year, the 245 Turbo was introduced as the 1982 model year. This created an entirely new car class. With turbocharging and the wagon body style, it became the world's first turbocharged estate car! However, these cars were only available for certain markets, and only a few were sold in Sweden. The first 245 Turbos sold in Sweden were for the 1984 model year. 1985 marked the final year for the Turbo, and in the last year, only the wagon variant was sold.

In addition to the engine, there were several details that were specific to the Turbo. On the exterior, the only distinguishing features were the wheels from Volvo's Virgo model and the Turbo emblems. Inside, there was plush upholstery, a black headliner in the sedan model, and a speedometer graded up to 220 km/h. The steering wheel and the leather trim around the gear lever were also unique.

Under the hood, there was a B21 engine with a Garrett turbocharger, producing 155 horsepower. The 240 Turbo could accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 9 seconds. Today, few cars are still equipped with the original oil-cooled turbochargers as they were often replaced with water-cooled ones when they failed. An intercooler was never fitted as standard, but it was available as an option through Volvo R-Sport. With an intercooler installed, the engine could produce up to 170 horsepower. The finest variants - GLT, GLE, and Turbo - were equipped with fuel injection, and all the engines were manufactured by Volvo with cast-iron blocks and aluminum cylinder heads. A B23 engine with turbocharging was never introduced in the 240 series; it would have to wait for the 760 model.
