"A car meticulously maintained by its first owner, with subsequent owners continuing the care, resulting in an exceptionally well-kept, well-preserved Toyota classic. Suitable for both a museum and a private collector."

Description

In December 1979, Mr. Stenlund from Burträsk took his 1976 Toyota Corolla and drove to Skellefteå. He walked into the company Bilconsult, having seen the advertisement for the new Corolla.

The new Corolla was the fourth generation, completely restyled with a more angular body and rectangular headlights. It was a car designed for the approaching modern 1980s. It seemed promising, and everything now depended on what Stenlund would have to pay in the trade-in difference between his 4-year-old E30 model and the new E70. Finally, he received an offer he couldn’t resist. The new car cost 32,500 kronor, with a trade-in value of 19,800 kronor for the old car, making the difference 12,700 kronor to be paid in cash upon delivery. The deal was made, and the new car was delivered on February 15, 1980. This can be seen from the preserved purchase contract that comes with the car. Considering the well-preserved condition and the fact that Mr. Stenlund kept his Corolla for the rest of his life, we conclude that he was very fond of his car. It is said that he was meticulous and always rinsed the wheel arches with the garden hose when washing the car. Every other year, he had the undercarriage rust-proofed with oil. In 1994, the car was inherited by his daughter. It had only driven 61,000 kilometers by then. The Corolla found another good home with her. Her husband was just as meticulous and continued the same careful maintenance. Even in its new home, the Corolla was spared from being driven on salted roads. The first owner’s daughter kept the car until 2016. (During the 21 years, the car had only driven 12,000 kilometers). The car was then passed on to a nearby couple with a great interest in classic cars. The new owners removed the seat covers that had been installed in the car. Lo and behold! The seat covers had been on since the Corolla was new. Underneath was a wonderfully well-preserved original upholstery that had not seen the sun’s rays for 36 years. At a local car meet in 2018, the Toyota won 1st prize for the best-preserved vehicle, competing with 165 participating classic cars. A check with the vehicle registry in 2020 showed that only two 1980 Toyota Corollas remained in traffic. As of July this year, this was the only Corolla still on the road. The current owner cannot continue to maintain it as meticulously as before. Therefore, they are passing the car on to the next Toyota enthusiast. The car comes with all the original keys from the 1980 delivery. All inspection records since the car was new, the owner’s manual, and the original jack and tools are included. According to the owners, this car has always been garage-kept and has never had winter tires mounted. We cannot verify this, but there is nothing to contradict the claim. It seems reasonable considering the condition. (This vehicle is being sold via remote auction and has not been test-driven by Bilwebauctions).

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Four-cylinder inline engine with a displacement of 1.3 liters, featuring an overhead camshaft and an output of 58 hp. It has a four-speed manual transmission with rear-wheel drive. Reportedly runs very well. The only remark is that the idle can become a bit low when the engine is fully warmed up, although it does not cause the engine to stall.

  • Interior condition:

Very fine, untouched original condition. The front and rear seats were protected by seat covers from 1980 to 2016. The trunk area looks just as good.

  • Exterior condition:

This car has not been repainted. There are some touch-ups for stone chips and a repair of paint peeling at the metal seam above the taillights, near the trunk lid. See the pictures. These issues do not detract from the overall impression of the car.

  • General condition:

A fantastically fine Toyota from the time when Japanese cars began gaining market share in Sweden. It’s hard to get enough of this bright orange Corolla. It evokes desire in all enthusiasts who appreciate well-preserved Japanese classic cars.

Facts about the model

The fourth generation E70, the last rear-wheel-drive model, was produced from 1979 to 1984. The wagon version of the E70 was manufactured until 1987. It typically came with a 1.3L or 1.6L engine, and there was also a 1.8L engine available in the Liftback model.

So here we have a conventional car with the engine in the front and rear-wheel drive. When you lift the hood, most components are easily identifiable and accessible. The model was available in various body styles: two-door, three-door, four-door, and five-door as a sedan, wagon, hardtop coupe, and Liftback. This generation was a best-seller, particularly in Asia. However, it also became a common sight on roads in the USA, Australia, and Europe.
