Buick Electra 225 Convertible — 1959

Beautiful triple-red Buick from the decade marked by optimism and record economic growth. The 1950s were a time in the USA when bigger was always better, and there weren’t many cars bigger than the Electra 225, which in convertible form was Buick’s flagship in 1959. They were produced in a limited edition of 5,493 units.

"After admiring the car’s fine appearance, the next pleasant surprise comes: it runs very smoothly and nicely, with good response when accelerating. However, if you lower the adjustable suspension so that the car sits low to the ground, as the youth prefer, the ride becomes bumpier. It’s simply a matter of taste. Completely road-ready, just turn the key and go."

Description

This Electra 225 convertible was imported to Sweden in the early 2000s. It was restored and registered in the Swedish vehicle registry in 2004. It was then purchased by a well-known enthusiast in Bergsjö. He wasn’t completely satisfied with the previous restoration, so he redid much of the work and spent significant sums to bring the car to an even better condition. He later sold the car to a good friend in Stockholm. However, he couldn’t forget the beautiful vehicle and couldn’t find another American car in as good condition, so after 4 years, he bought the car back. The car has had a total of seven owners according to the vehicle registry, with the same person owning it twice. The current owner has had the car since 2020 and is very satisfied with it. He has now fulfilled his dream of owning a 1959 Buick 225 convertible and is ready to let it go to a new owner.

The car comes with a binder of receipts and other documentation about the car. It is equipped with air suspension, allowing easy adjustment of height and ground clearance. The original suspension is included, see the owner’s comment. The car includes a spare tire, original jack, and one set of car keys. The display sign seen in one of the photos is also included.

Bilsport Classic featured a report on the car in issue 11, 2010.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Equipped with a 401 cubic inch V8 engine rated at 325 hp and a Dynaflow automatic transmission. The engine and transmission run smoothly.

(After our visit and test drive, the owner discovered a small water leak from the water pump. It’s not major, but we want to highlight that the buyer should check this. We don’t know if it will be sufficient to replace the gasket or if the pump needs replacing.)

Other features include an electric convertible top, power windows, 6-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, power steering, and power brakes. It is equipped with a modern alternator that looks like the original generator. In 2021, air bags/air suspension were installed, allowing the height of the car to be adjusted individually at the front and rear with a remote control.

  • Interior condition:

Very nice and well-maintained interior. There is a small mark on the driver’s seat cushion, like a nick about 5-7 mm in size. Color-matched floor mats with the Buick logo protect the carpet. The special Sonomatic car radio has been converted with Bluetooth and an auxiliary input, and along with better speakers in the original location, it sounds surprisingly good.

The charging gauge is disconnected as it does not work with a modern alternator. The fuel gauge has uncertain functionality. The power to the driver’s seat adjustment is not connected. There is a loose connection in a window switch. A newly made trunk lining in the original appearance is included but needs to be installed. See additional picture.

  • Exterior condition:

The paintwork, reportedly done in Sweden during the restoration after import in the mid-2000s, is in good condition. The red canvas soft top is still in as fine a condition as it was at the time of the restoration. The chrome and trim are nicely polished. There are pores in the chrome by the vent windows and worn chrome at the bottom edge of the front bumper. Chrome vent window frames are included for replacement, as shown in the picture. Newly made authentic wire wheels are installed, and the original wheels with hubcaps are included separately.

  • General condition:

A delightful and sought-after “Top of the line” model. Nicely restored car that runs well and looks great. There are a few minor issues, including a small damage on the driver’s seat cushion and a report of a leaking water pump that was received just before publication.

Owner's comment

I have owned and enjoyed the car since 2020. I have had air suspension installed, which can be adjusted with a remote control, upgraded the car stereo to play music via mobile phone, and installed an alternator that has the classic generator look. When I bought the car, it had a tow hitch mounted. I removed it, and it is included with the car. When BWA test drove the car, we discovered that a sensor for the air suspension had stopped working. You can still raise and lower the car’s height, but I have ordered a replacement sensor that will be included with the car. Original shock absorbers and springs are also included for those who want to revert to the original setup. Just swap them out; nothing has been modified or damaged. The original wheels and hubcaps are also included. I have also sourced newly chromed window frames for the vent windows, which are included. The new interior for the trunk is included as well (see pictures).

Facts about the model

The model name Electra is said to come from the Greek goddess of the same name. The 1959 Buick Electra 225 is a prominent model in automotive history. The introduction of the Electra 225 name would become synonymous with luxury and style in Buick’s lineup. The “225” refers to the car’s overall length in inches. Dramatic styling, sweeping lines, large fins, and distinctive chrome details set the tone for the luxurious full-size American sedans of the late 1950s and early 1960s.
