"A charming and understated executive car from the early 1970s, presented in the popular compact format. Finished in an attractive color combination and offering a touch of extra flair with a six-cylinder engine and automatic transmission.

Mostly in original condition and well cared for, but after a longer period of inactivity, it now requires some inspection and attention to various details."

Description

This car was first registered for road use on September 21, 1972. On April 18, 1975, it was acquired by the current owner's father. He used the car with great care and maintained it diligently, changing the oil and filter every 5,000 km. Once a year, it also visited Thillmans Bilverkstad in Bergshamra for inspections and adjustments of ignition components and more.

Following his passing, the son took over ownership in September 2003. Since then, it has only seen the occasional short drive—some years none at all. It has always been garage kept.

A few years ago, the brakes were fully overhauled by MBZ on Lidingö. The fuel pump and filter were also replaced, along with the dimmer for the instrument lighting. Oil and filter have recently been changed.

The odometer currently reads 48,800 km; it has likely rolled over once, though this cannot be guaranteed. The car is equipped with a tow hitch.

Included with the car are the original owner’s manual, service booklet, and a couple of workshop manuals, along with two sets of keys. Last inspection passed, but not currently inspected.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Starts easily and the engine ran well. Given that the car has seen only limited use since the turn of the millennium, a thorough inspection is recommended. During a short test drive, it appeared to function well but would benefit from attention to some details.

The alternator belt needs tightening, as there was some squealing from the “fan belt.” There was also a bit of a clunking sound—typical for older automatic transmissions.

The car has not been inspected on a lift, but from what could be seen, all vital components appeared to be in good condition. No remarks from previous inspections regarding the underside.

  • Interior condition:

The interiors of Mercedes have always been known for their robustness and high quality. In this case, the upholstery has remained remarkably fresh, thanks to many years of protective seat covers.

The seats—both front and rear—are in great condition, with good firmness and clean fabric. Door panels, trim, carpets, and headliner are also well-preserved.

Steering wheel, controls, dashboard, and gauges are in good working order. During inspection, the fan did not operate—its function is uncertain and should be checked. The clock works, as does the period-correct Blaupunkt radio.

Equipped with retractable seatbelts at all four seating positions. Comes with molded Mercedes floor mats.

  • Exterior condition:

Original exterior with paint, glass, chrome, trim, rubber/plastic parts, and lighting elements all in good condition considering the car’s age and mileage. Minor stone chips, scratches, and small dents are present, along with a few spots of minor paint bubbling. A proper detailing would significantly enhance its appearance.

Wheels and hubcaps are in good condition, though the older tires should be replaced. Engine bay and trunk are consistent with the overall condition.

  • General condition:

After more than 50 years, this car remains in good condition—with doors that still close with a satisfying click and seats that retain their firmness. It's a vehicle that has been used, cared for, and still carries an air of quality.

While cabriolets, coupés, and high-end luxury versions now command a fortune, this example offers a simpler yet dignified classic—an ideal enthusiast’s car and practical vintage driver at a reasonable price.

Facts about the model

The Mercedes W115 model was introduced at the turn of 1967/68 as a 1968 model year and remained in production until 1976. Following the somewhat larger previous model, this new, slightly smaller car quickly earned the nickname “Kompakt.” Interestingly, despite its more compact exterior, the interior space was on par with earlier models.

The base versions were equipped with the 200 and 200D engines—the latter becoming a well-known and much-loved taxi engine worldwide. From there, buyers could step up to the 220 and 220D variants. Toward the end of the W115's run, Mercedes offered the larger 240D engine, and from July 1974, even a five-cylinder diesel in the form of the 240D 3.0.

Higher in the lineup were the six-cylinder models—230, 250, and 280—produced under the W114 designation. The 230 six-cylinder engine, without fuel injection, had a displacement of 2,281 cm³ and featured twin Zenith carburetors, producing 120 hp. Depending on model and year, these cars came with four- or five-speed gearboxes, or an optional four-speed automatic transmission.

Over the years, the W115/W114 series saw continuous improvements. In Sweden, for example, headlight wipers were introduced for the 1973 model year. A major update came in 1974—often referred to as Series 2—which included a revised front end, new taillights, larger side mirrors, and the removal of front vent windows. These updates mirrored design cues from the new S-Class and the upcoming successor, the W123.

In 1972, renowned Swedish automotive journalist Jan Ullén tested various cars in his classic Biltest and naturally included the Mercedes in the “status” category—where it emerged as the winner. It was praised for offering a rare combination of genuine strengths, even if it wasn’t the best in any one category. When scoring real advantages such as road safety, space, and comfort, the Mercedes outperformed every other car.

In short, it could be summed up as simply: a damn good car.
