Description

This car was imported to Sweden from Italy by a well-known automotive enthusiast and motoring journalist. Thanks to his connections, he was able to purchase the vehicle when it had only covered about 5,000 km. He drove it home to Sweden, and it was registered for road use here on March 15, 2012.

It features the larger 260 hp engine, a six-speed gearbox, and all-wheel drive.

Over the years, it has been used as an enthusiast car during the brighter half of the year and has always been stored in a garage. It has received regular maintenance, including replacement of consumable parts—primarily serviced by Aftén Bil in Åkersberga. Receipts are included.

The car has been rustproofed. The current mileage is 28,340 km, verified by inspection documents.

Included is a complete set of original manuals and documentation, along with two keys.
Inspected and ready to drive.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Starts easily and ran well in both engine and drivetrain. During a short test drive in a residential area, the car felt lively and responsive, with all components related to steering, handling, clutch, gearbox, and brakes functioning properly.

It has not been inspected on a lift, but everything visible appeared to be in good condition. The car has not been driven in winter and has been rustproofed. No remarks from vehicle inspections.

  • Interior condition:

Nice original interior with good seat comfort. Door panels, trim, and carpets are in great condition. Steering wheel, controls, dashboard, center console, and gauges are all well-preserved.

Most functions work reliably, but the AC should be checked, the outside temperature gauge is non-functional, and the cruise control works intermittently. Seat-folding mechanism needs lubrication. There is also some wear on the roll bars from the soft top.

  • Exterior condition:

Appears to have a nice, likely original paint finish. A few minor stone chips, a small dent, and a scratch are present. Overall, it’s in great condition considering its age and mileage. Glass, emblems, and lighting elements are in good shape.

Wheels are in excellent condition and fitted with newer Pirelli tires. Engine bay and trunk are at the same high level.

The soft top is in good condition—clean and well-sealed, with only light signs of use. Folding mechanism works smoothly.

  • General condition:

An Alfa Romeo Spider is a bold machine and true driver’s car—always a strong candidate for classic and enthusiast status. This particular example, with its design, engineering, history, and condition, is no exception. Now ready for a new owner to take on winding roads and serve as a style icon at car meets.

Facts about the model

Alfa Romeo is, as many know, a classic Italian car manufacturer that began operations as early as 1910 in Milan. Today, the company is headquartered in Turin and is part of the Stellantis group.

Despite a somewhat tumultuous history, Alfa Romeo has launched a wealth of iconic models over the years, many with a distinct focus on sportiness and driving pleasure. The open-top Spider version has always been especially alluring.

The Spider, initially based on the Giulia 105 and later the 115 series—with design by Pininfarina—followed a classic European sports car layout: front engine, rear-wheel drive. It became one of the longest-produced convertibles in automotive history, with model years spanning from 1966 to 1993 (with a few final units labeled as 1994 models).

The first generation, Series 1, gained wide attention after being featured in the 1967 film The Graduate starring Dustin Hoffman. That version was easily recognized by its distinctive plastic headlight covers and rounded rear end. From the start, it earned several nicknames, as beloved cars often do—such as Duetto, Osso di Seppia, and Roundtail.

In 1970, the Series II was introduced, featuring a more angular rear design while retaining the same front styling. For the 1983 model year, Series III brought redesigned front and rear ends with a rubber spoiler. This version lasted until 1990, when the final facelift—Series IV—was released, with updated styling and a cleaner rear design, now without the rubber lip.

In total, 124,104 rear-wheel-drive Alfa Romeo Spiders were produced between 1966 and 1993.

A new generation arrived for the 1995 model year, now with front-wheel drive and a wedge-shaped silhouette, again styled by Pininfarina. These models came with a range of engines, from 1.8-liter four-cylinders to 3.2-liter V6s. They were lively cars with excellent handling, thanks in large part to a newly developed multi-link rear suspension.

The GTV models were initially produced in Milan, but from 2000 onward, production moved to Pininfarina in Turin. Production officially ended in 2004, though cars were sold as late as the 2006 model year.

The next generation—the Brera and Spider (Type 939)—was produced from 2005 to 2010 and 2006 to 2010, respectively. Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro at Italdesign, with Pininfarina finalizing the styling of the open Spider version, these models were available with both front-wheel and Torsen-based all-wheel drive.

Engines ranged from four- to six-cylinders, including a couple of diesel options. The Spider made its debut at the Geneva Motor Show in 2006 and was awarded “Cabrio of the Year.”

A fun bit of trivia: the V6 engine used in these models had its origins at GM’s Holden division in Australia and was shared with both Saab and Alfa Romeo, though Alfa implemented several of its own engineering modifications.

A total of 34,274 units were built, of which 12,488 were Spiders.
