Description

The car was initially put into service by Saab ANA in Trollhättan in October 1993. They used it until September 1995 when it was purchased by a man from Malmö. He drove it until 2008 when it was sold to an individual in Bjärred. However, the second owner only kept it for a week, and on September 20, 2008, the current owner acquired it.

The current owner is a passionate Saab enthusiast and a highly skilled mechanic who has worked with cars throughout their life. After purchasing the car, it was stored in a heated garage until this year when it was taken out and underwent some technical and exterior work (see technical and exterior description).

The car has a late chassis number, which is only 15 digits away from the last Saab 900 displayed at the Saab Museum. It is possible that this car might be one of the last ones produced and still in active use.

Facts about the model

The first generation Saab 900 was sold between May 12, 1978, and 1994. It shared many similarities with the Saab 99 and was essentially a larger and more comfortable evolution of the 99, using the same B-engine. In the US market, several dealers struggled with the concept of it being a new model due to its striking resemblance to the old 99.

The marketing department recognized a declining interest in the Saab 99, and the financial resources required to develop an entirely new car were lacking. However, new US safety regulations and the crowded engine bay when installing a turbo demanded a new front end. This presented an opportunity for the marketing department to scale up the model into a larger and more luxurious car, targeting a segment less price-sensitive than the lower-priced segments.

The middle and rear sections of the car remained mostly unchanged, but significant modifications included interior changes, especially the new and modern instrument panel, a new windshield, and more efficient headlights in the new front end. The most significant changes were a 21 cm longer car (with 9 cm longer bumpers), a 5.2 cm longer wheelbase, and a 2 cm wider track than the Saab 99. Despite the larger body, the use of aluminum in certain details helped keep the weight down, resulting in the new car weighing only 20 kg more than its predecessor.

The front suspension construction was largely retained but reinforced and fine-tuned with different wheel angles and optimized placement of dampers and springs.

The Saab 900 continued the hatchback concept and was available as a 3- and 5-door variant. A sedan model was introduced as the 1981 model year.

In 1986, the 900 lineup expanded with the introduction of a convertible version manufactured in Nystad, Finland. The convertible proved to be a significant success, particularly in the important US market. It was well-insulated for an open-top car, setting a new trend and making it popular as a year-round vehicle. The front end and bumpers underwent a redesign for the 1987 model year. The Saab 900 remains one of Saab's most iconic models.

The first generation Saab 900 was available as a sedan (2 doors from the 1984 model year and 4 doors from the 1981 model year), hatchback (3 or 5 doors), and convertible (2 doors from the 1986 model year). It offered several engine options, all of which were 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline engines, with variations in fuel delivery (carburetor/injection/turbo). Additionally, a 20 cm longer version of the four-door model, called the 900 CD, was produced from 1981 to 1986. This version had increased interior space and luxurious features, and it was exclusively available with a turbocharged engine. Only around 500 examples of the 900 CD were made.
