Mercedes-Benz 180 D — 1962

A classic 1960s Mercedes that is a natural fit for any vintage car gathering. This particular Mercedes model with a diesel engine was beloved by rural residents and driven for miles upon miles due to its reasonable operating costs. Here we have an unusually well-preserved example of this model.

"A road-ready "Bull-Mercedes" in genuinely unaltered condition. It looks just as it did when it was originally produced. No significant issues have been found. The recommendation is to eventually replace the front bumper with the correct model."

Description

A lovely Mercedes that has previously been in use in Norrland, Sweden. It comes with older inspection documents from Boden, Luleå, and Skellefteå. It was registered on June 27, 1962, and belongs to the later production batch of the W120 model, as production ceased in October 1962.

The current owner's family purchased the car in 2004 and invested in a new interior, tailored to match the original. According to vintage vehicle regulations, the car is now exempt from inspections since the last approved inspection was conducted in 2018.

The odometer shows just over 5,000 Swedish miles. These odometers roll over and start from zero again at 10,000 miles. In this case, it is believed that the odometer has completed a full cycle, but the exact mileage is unknown. Considering the well-preserved body, it is reasonable to estimate that it has covered approximately 15,000 miles. The Mercedes of that era was built to withstand daily use for decades, so there is no significant concern about the mileage.

The original instruction book, brochure, and jack are included with the car.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The car starts smoothly after the so-called "glow plug" warm-up. It utilizes an old, proven technology that owners of older diesel vehicles are familiar with. The car runs well and produces the characteristic sound of a Mercedes diesel from that era—a familiar clattering noise. It is equipped with a four-cylinder diesel engine featuring an overhead camshaft and two valves per cylinder, delivering a stated power output of 68 horsepower. The car also has a 4-speed manual transmission with a floor-mounted shifter. The mechanical fuel pump has been replaced with an electric pump by the current owner to enhance reliability.

  • Interior condition:

The interior is in excellent condition. The seat upholstery and door panels have been remanufactured by an upholsterer, faithfully replicating the original design and pattern. The craftsmanship is of high quality and well-executed. This work was commissioned by the current owner's family. The headliner is the original one and is in good condition, with only a few stains near the edges, as shown in the pictures. In the rear seats, modern three-point seat belts have been installed for improved safety when transporting children or going on outings (front seat belts are missing). The rubber floor mats are well-preserved.

The trunk is neat and tidy, with a nice original rubber mat. The spare wheel is equipped with an older Esso radial tire that appears to be completely unused.

  • Exterior condition:

The body is straight and in good condition, but it has undergone an older repaint. There are some imperfections in the paint, including a few blisters and a rust damage on the right front fender. It is normal to have stone chips on the front. There is some surface rust on the underside of the sill due to gravel spray, which is common for cars driven on gravel roads. Nothing serious. Please refer to the pictures for reference. New diagonal tires with white sidewalls were installed in 2005. The front bumper has been replaced and is from the subsequent W110 model. (The original front bumper, which requires refurbishment, is included.)

  • General condition:

A good and well-functioning vintage Mercedes. It falls on the upper end of the scale for used condition. The overall condition is very good, and the car is in excellent shape.

Facts about the model

The Mercedes 180 (W120), introduced in July 1953, was Mercedes-Benz's first newly designed volume model after World War II. With its self-supporting pontoon body, it was a departure from its predecessors. When production ceased in October 1962, almost half a million cars had been manufactured in various versions. The final development, the 180c/180 Dc, was introduced in July 1961. The gasoline engine received higher power output through a modified valve mechanism, while the diesel variant now featured a two-liter engine from the W110 model.
