"Despite its period-correct bias-ply tyres, the motorcycle feels surprisingly composed on the road and remains enjoyable through the bends. Naturally, the café-style seat prioritises looks over long-distance comfort, making it less suited to extended touring."

Description

It was delivered new in Sweden in March 1984 as an RT model—a long-distance touring motorcycle equipped with a full fairing. The bike has had a quiet ownership history, with only a handful of owners who each kept it for extended periods. Throughout its life, it has been toured and carefully maintained by dedicated BMW enthusiasts.

The current owner purchased the motorcycle in 2018 as a well-preserved original example, without revealing his plans for its transformation. One can only hope the previous owner wasn't too sentimental about seeing such a fine donor bike become a café racer.

The motorcycle was last inspected and approved on 15 July 2020, after the conversion had been completed and the new speedometer installed. Before the rebuild, the original odometer showed approximately 130,000 kilometres, which explains the official record noting a discrepancy in the recorded mileage.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

The engine and gearbox remain internally original, with regular oil servicing carried out. The carburettors have been ultrasonically cleaned and fitted with new jets. The entire electrical system—apart from the engine management—has been replaced with a modern MotoGadget system, featuring, among other upgrades, a keyless-go function with push-button start and a double-press stop function.

The charging system has also been upgraded with a higher-capacity alternator from the British BMW specialist Motorworks, replacing the original unit, which is known for its limited output.

As part of the café racer conversion, the rear subframe was shortened and the front forks were rebuilt with fresh seals and oil.

  • Exterior condition

The custom paintwork draws inspiration from Douglas Adams' cult classic The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, where the number 42 is famously the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything—a reference that has since become a light-hearted in-joke throughout the IT community.

A slim, stylish seat pad complements the café racer concept perfectly, while the headlamp has been sourced from a Husqvarna military motorcycle, adding an extra touch of character and authenticity to the build.

  • General condition

A thoughtfully designed and expertly executed café racer conversion, built with equal emphasis on functionality and aesthetics.

Facts about the model

The BMW R80 is one of the marque's most successful models, powered by the classic 797 cc twin-cylinder boxer engine. Produced in various versions between 1977 and 1997, it delivered around 50 horsepower. The R80 is best known for its reliability and shaft drive, and in recent years it has also become a popular platform for café racer and scrambler builds. The motorcycle is fitted with newer Firestone bias-ply tyres.
