Description

The owner of this very fine and lavish 850 T-5R station wagon was only 7 years old when he made his decision. The car would one day be his. The then-owner raised an eyebrow when a 7-year-old boy approached and asked if he could buy the car. It wasn’t for sale, especially not to a young kid who had just started school. The saying “perseverance pays off” turned out to be true. The 7-year-old grew up, years passed, and from the age of 13, he worked summer jobs relentlessly. Every penny was saved, and eventually, the young boy managed to take over ownership of his dream car at the age of 17.
The 7-year-old who became 17 and owner of a Volvo is named Mattias Johansson and is now 27 years old. After much hesitation and mature consideration, he has now decided to sell the car. Bilweb Auctions has been tasked with auctioning the car. “So many people want to buy my car, so to avoid making anyone sad, everyone now has the same opportunity to bid on the car,” says Mattias.
He has documented the entire history of the car, as well as how he has cared for it, in a document that you can read by clicking the link.

In short, he has researched the car’s history, and there is much evidence suggesting that the car was used internally by Volvo during its first years as a demo car or test vehicle.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Equipped with a 2.3-liter inline 5-cylinder turbocharged engine with a stated power output of 226 horsepower. (The engine delivers 240 hp through an over-boost function for 30 seconds under full throttle, distinguishing the T-5R when new).
The transmission is automatic. Serviced annually. The transmission has been flushed every 5 years and the timing belt was replaced in 2020. Öhlins adjustable rear shock absorbers. Stainless steel exhaust system. Refurbished air conditioning. No technical issues. See the link with the owner’s story for more information.

  • Interior condition:

The interior is very nice with only minor signs of wear. The condition is clearly above average. The steering wheel was refurbished in 2014 with suede and leather, still looking as good as new. New rubber mats are included separately. The model-specific textile mats are in excellent condition. Both rubber and textile mats for the cargo area are included. See pictures. Built-in original child car seat in the rear seat.

  • Exterior condition:

Mostly original paintwork, except for the plastic skirts and the spoiler. There are minor stone chips on the front, nothing significant. A new original grille was installed in 2013. A new windshield without any damage was fitted in 2014. There is some wear/touch-up paint on a side trim and on a door opening. Please see the pictures. There is minimal surface rust near the rear hatch handle, and some abrasion from the license plate. The door stop on the left rear door needs attention (it has come loose).

  • General condition:

It’s evident that this wagon has never fallen into the wrong hands. It has been used as an exceptionally sporty family car until the current owner purchased it. Since then, with youthful enthusiasm, he has annually invested a lot of time and money into maintaining and preserving the car. One shouldn’t fixate on the mileage; this is a truly fine vehicle.

Facts about the model

With the model 850, Volvo initiated a new era. After 65 years of rear-wheel drive cars, it was finally time for front-wheel drive. The new model brought many other innovations such as a completely new transversely-mounted five-cylinder engine, the new delta-link rear axle, side-impact protection system (SIPS), self-adjusting front seat belts, and more.

It was a massive investment for its time, totaling 16 billion when the model was completed and unveiled in 1991. While Volvo retained core values such as quality and safety, they moved up towards the premium class and gained a significantly more modern and sporty image.

The project, initially dubbed Galaxy and initiated by PG Gyllenhammar in 1978, was designed by Jan Wilsgaard. It stood on the podium at Globen during its premiere on June 11, 1991, astonishing the entire automotive world. From 1992 to 1996, new variants continuously emerged, initially based on a four-door body, and later in 1993, following Volvo’s style, a five-door estate version. This body style was also used in racing for effective PR and brand promotion.

The 850 T-5R, originally known as T-Gul (T-Yellow), was manufactured in 1994 and 1996 for the model years 1995-1996. At the time, it was Volvo’s fastest, most powerful, and most expensive car ever. Initially launched in yellow (hence the name), other discreet colors were introduced throughout its production. Later, a red version, the 850 R or T-Red, followed.
