"An unusual survivor of one of the hot GT cars that emerged in the 1970s. West Germany still had 16 years left as a nation and dominated the development of small, spirited cars with sporty ambitions. Based on the Golf but with a 2+2 coupe and hatchback, it’s a practical sports car. Most have disappeared today, and few survivors remain in this original condition. The hood has been repainted, and there’s a repaired section, but it’s part of the car’s history. A trim on the driver’s side is not installed, including a spar box trim. They come with it but need new tape and clips. Even if someone may miss a letter in the model designation, you get a fully equipped and spirited GT car. Possibly an advantage for today’s drivers approaching its 50-year mark with a traditional carburetor. The 72 lively horsepower in the small car still provides spirited performance, good economy, and reliability. A truly fun car."

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Starts easily and ran briskly with good engine and drivetrain performance. All functions such as steering, clutch, gearbox, brakes, etc., appeared to work well. It has been inspected prior to startup and sale, but a thorough check is always recommended when a car has not been driven regularly in recent years. Not inspected on a lift, but visible components appeared in good condition.

  • Interior condition:

Original interior that has held up well. Both the seats and rear bench have retained their firmness and shine in the fabric. Door panels, carpets, and headliner are in excellent condition. The steering wheel, gauges, and controls are in fine original condition and fully functional.

  • Exterior condition:

Mainly an original paint job in good condition with some parts repainted, such as the hood and around some wheel arches. A couple of trim pieces need to be installed (included). Missing a rubber strip on the front bumper. Otherwise, glass, chrome, rubber, and lighting details are in excellent condition. Nice wheels with likely original Michelin X tires. They have dry cracks and need to be replaced.”

  • General condition:

These cars were hot back in the day but are now almost extinct. This one is both rare and in unusually well-preserved original condition. It has never been driven in the GT scene or modified. There are details to take care of, but with that said, it’s a delightful little gem, a classic and enthusiast’s car.

Facts about the model

The Scirocco model was launched in 1974 as the successor to the Karmann models. It wasn’t just about a sporty design but also embodied actual sporting ambitions in terms of handling and performance. Like its predecessors, Karmann built the model, with design by Giorgetto Giugiaro.

Series 1 was a practical 2+2 hatchback, built on the same platform as the Golf among others. The front suspension featured McPherson struts and a well-tuned chassis that provided excellent handling. The interior was considered sporty with a sports steering wheel, numerous gauges, and tartan upholstery that harmonized with the car’s color.

Initially, it was available in L, LS, and TS versions, but in Sweden, only the TS version was available in the early years, which was the most luxurious and powerful version. In the 1977 model year, the GTi model was introduced with 110 hp and a mechanical fuel-injected engine. Without fuel injection, it was called the GT and had a carburetor engine producing 72 hp.

Series 1 was produced until the 1981 model year, totaling 504,153 units. The Series 2 was introduced for the 1982 model year.
