"Indeed, this ambulance qualifies as a rolling cultural heritage. It is entirely Swedish-built and served during Sweden's prosperous years. This vehicle deserves to be taken care of and restored to its former glory. It is a great project that doesn't necessarily require a complete overhaul. The chassis appears to be in excellent condition, making a partial restoration a viable option. The buyer can determine the level of restoration according to their preferences."

Description

This ambulance was built in 1956 by the bodywork manufacturer Grip-kaross in Västervik. It was delivered to Åkers Krutbruk, located in Åkers Styckebruk. The ambulance was registered for three passengers and equipped with two stretchers. It also had an alarm system with emergency lights and a siren. At that time, red forward-facing lights were used as a request for the right of way. When the blue light reform was introduced in 1970, the ambulance was supplemented with a blue light and siren.
The ambulance was assigned inventory number 7224 by the Swedish Defense Materiel Administration (FMV), which included Åkers Krutbruk.

It served as an industrial ambulance until the mid-1970s when it was sold to a private individual. At that time, the ambulance had only driven 800 kilometers. After passing through several owners over the years, one of whom began to disassemble and initiate repairs due to some rust damage around the rear fenders, it ended up with a well-known car enthusiast in Umeå in 2021. He is now selling the ambulance because his garage is too crowded. The odometer currently reads 2154 kilometers, and we are confident that this is the correct mileage.

Between its last inspection in 2003 and being put away in 2005, it only drove 120 kilometers. It now requires some work, such as sheet metal repairs, a new paint job, interior work, brake repairs, and more, to get back on the road.

The PV Club published an article about the ambulance in its member magazine in 2010. Some pictures of how the car looked when new are also included.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The ambulance is equipped with a B4B engine and a 3-speed gearbox. The specified engine power is 45 horsepower. The engine has been test-started with a priming in the carburetor and it functions. However, it requires servicing and fresh fuel in the tank to ensure proper performance.

  • Interior condition:

The interiors of these ambulances were originally very basic and utilitarian. Smooth surfaces were preferred for easy cleaning. The front seats have original vinyl upholstery with some signs of use and a damage on the right seat. The door panels are available but not installed. The original headliner is in good condition. However, the rear side upholstery is missing.

  • Exterior condition:

The chassis is in very good condition. The body is complete, except for the front bumper. The rare 5-ribbed grille is also present and in great condition.

Some parts are disassembled and included separately, as shown in the pictures. There are some minor rust damages around the rear fender attachments, but overall, it has been well-preserved.

  • General condition:

    Very good untouched project car.

Owner's comment

I have renovated several old emergency vehicles as a hobby. The plan was to renovate the ambulance within a year, as it has a unique history and the body model was a sort of prototype for the Volvo Duett. Unfortunately, I have too little space and must let the ambulance go.

Facts about the model

Between 1949 and 1962, Volvo offered a delivery chassis type PV 445 & P 21114 A.

Customers could then have a separate body manufacturer build the body according to their preferences.

However, Volvo soon recognized the demand for spacious vehicles and decided to produce them themselves. This led to the creation of the Volvo Duett, which was launched in the summer of 1953. The name "Duett" reflects Volvo's vision of the car serving both as a professional vehicle and a leisure vehicle. Chassis production continued alongside

Duett production until 1961. A total of 4,194 Volvo chassis were delivered by 1962.
