Description

Volvo PV 1951 equipped with the roof-mounted blinker device commonly known as the "takgök" (roof cuckoo). It was an invention called Fixlight that was believed to contribute to road safety. However, contemporary reports suggest that it had the opposite effect. The following year, the roof cuckoos were discontinued.

Cars from northern Sweden often pique the interest of enthusiasts. The substantial winter roads without salt are, of course, one of the reasons. Additionally, there has been space in barns and garages to store older vehicles.

This 1951 PV has been stored in a dry and secure place near Storuman. It has had only a few previous owners and has been in the same family for the past 38 years. It underwent a full restoration in 1987. The odometer reads 3752 Swedish miles. As most people know, these odometers went up to 10,000 miles and then started over at zero. It is likely that the odometer had already completed at least one full cycle before the restoration. The spare wheel is missing.

The original instruction manual, jack, and tools as shown in the pictures are included. It is advisable to supplement the car with modern discreet blinkers before driving on public roads. Nowadays, most people have never heard of roof cuckoos.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Equipped with the B4B engine, with a stated output of 44 horsepower. The engine started and ran smoothly when fuel was externally supplied. The fuel tank needs to be emptied and filled with fresh gasoline. According to information, the engine was overhauled in 1987. After a long period of inactivity, a brake inspection is recommended. It will also require a new 6-volt starting battery.

  • Interior condition:

The original headliner is in very good condition. The rest of the interior is in almost new condition. The rubber floor mats were newly manufactured in the 1980s and still look great today.

  • Exterior condition:

The car was repainted during the renovation in the 1980s.

The paint has held up well, and the chrome and trim are in good condition. There is a minor dent on the front bumper. A polishing would bring out the full beauty of the car. New tires with white sidewalls were installed in the 1980s and are suitable for display purposes. It is also equipped with a stylish roof visor/sunshade.

  • General condition:

Nice car of rare vintage. Renovated in the 1980s and still in very good condition.

Owner's comment

We took over the car in 1985 and by 1987 we had completed the renovation. We had fixed the rust that was present, renovated the engine, obtained new rubber mats, painted the car, and installed the accompanying interior. I then used it very sparingly and since the beginning of the 1990s it has been stored in the garage. I have only occasionally started it and warmed up the engine.

Facts about the model

The Volvo PV 444 with the "takgök" (roof cuckoo) is a remarkable car from its era.

In the fall of 1950, Volvo introduced an updated version of its PV 444.

The most spectacular innovation was on the roof, where a new type of turn signal indicator was installed, replacing the previous arrows. This innovation was called "Fixlight" and was developed by Walter Bengtsson, who owned the company Fixfabrikerna in Majorna, Gothenburg.

Bengtsson had obtained a patent for his Fixlight as early as 1947, and later he convinced Assar Gabrielsson of its excellence. The Fixlight had the shape of a T with a curved base. The transverse part contained three lights: a steady blue-green light in the middle and flashing orange lights on either side. The middle light was intended to make it easier to determine if the car was turning left or right. However, it quickly encountered problems. It was not possible to install a roof rack on the cars, and it was forbidden on export markets due to the difficulty of determining the direction of the flashing lights. The Fixlight disappeared in 1952, and as of 1953, it was prohibited on new cars in Sweden as well.

Many of the cars that originally had this type of roof cuckoo turn signal were later equipped with side turn signals. Today, PV enthusiasts with the correct model years often seek to restore the original appearance. Moreover, the Fixlight itself has become a collector's item, fetching high prices at collector fairs.
