Facts about the model
Former Le Mans winner Carroll Shelby decided in 1961 to fulfill his dream of building the world's fastest sports car. Shelby's solution was simple: take a big, powerful, and reliable American V8 engine and put it into a lightweight European chassis. He entered into a partnership with the British sports car manufacturer AC Cars, which provided the chassis and body. American Ford supplied the drivetrain. The engine was a 260 cubic inch V8 that Ford had developed for its midsize car, the Fairlane. AC Cars sent the chassis to Shelby's facility, located near the Riverside International Raceway in California, where final assembly took place. Shelby then tuned the engine to the customer's specifications. In 1963, the Cobra was updated with Ford's new 289 cubic inch V8, solidifying its status as a legendary car. It became a winning machine, dominating countless American championships and competitions in Europe. Among its victories were scalps from the likes of the Ferrari 250 GTO and muscular Corvettes. The Shelby Cobra was known to be a handful to tame, but above all, it was incredibly fast. As engine size and horsepower grew, with the introduction of big-block engines, including the famous 427, the Cobra became even more formidable. Official production of the AC Cobra ceased in 1968. By that time, US authorities had introduced a number of new safety and environmental regulations. Since the Cobra was an old design, it was deemed too costly to adapt the car, and production was discontinued.
