Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Starts easily and runs smoothly. The gearbox, clutch, steering, brakes, and other mechanical components are functioning well. It has not been inspected on a lift, but from what could be observed, the essential parts appear to be in good condition. A thorough inspection is recommended.

  • Interior condition:

Relatively untouched and well-preserved beige interior, which appears to be in original condition. There is normal wear and tear consistent with its age. The front and rear seats have decent firmness, with door panels, headliner, and carpets in good condition. Controls and instruments are in good shape, though the functions may require an inspection.

  • Exterior condition:

Newer paintwork with a glossy finish, though not in perfect condition. The glass, chrome, trim, lighting components, and similar details appear to be in normal used condition for the car's age. The wheels and tires are in good condition. The engine and trunk compartments are in typical condition for their age. The trunk contains a more recent speaker system, with functionality uncertain. Period-correct red lights/emergency lights are mounted but not operational.

  • General condition:

The Valiant was a popular car during the first half of the 1960s and a relatively common sight on our roads. Durable, reasonably spacious, and comfortable, it carried the positive aura of American cars, albeit in a compact version. This car now has sixty years of history on the road and has been used but remains in good, functional condition, now dressed in a police uniform. Whether you choose to keep this look or not, this is a 1960s classic that evokes a strong sense of nostalgia.

Facts about the model

The Valiant was one of Mopar's models introduced during the transition from the 1950s to the 1960s, as the excesses of the previous decade gave way to the more compact designs of the new era. The model was first unveiled at the London Motor Show in October 1959. Initially named simply Valiant, it was quickly rebranded in 1960 as Chrysler Valiant and, the following year, as Plymouth Valiant. However, for export markets such as Sweden, it continued to be branded as Chrysler for a few more years. Valiant was produced across four generations until 1976.

The first generation (1959–1962) featured distinctive small, horizontal fins both at the front and rear and was offered as two- and four-door sedans and station wagons. The second generation (1963–1966) adopted a more restrained and streamlined design. It was available as two- and four-door sedans, station wagons, and a two-door hardtop called the Signet. As an additional highlight, a convertible was also introduced.

For the 1967 model year, a more minimalist design in late 1960s fashion was introduced, available as two- and four-door sedans and two-door hardtops. This generation continued production until 1973. The fourth and final generation reflected the style of the 1970s, grew slightly in size, and was available as a four-door sedan and a two-door hardtop.

Valiant was manufactured in many countries, and in Sweden, the model was imported by ANA (later Saab-ANA from 1965). The first generation came exclusively with six-cylinder engines paired with either manual or automatic transmissions. Later generations also offered V8 engines.

In Sweden, the Valiant was a popular and relatively common police car. It was considered robust, reliable, and suitable for police work thanks to its larger size and powerful engines. Police versions were outfitted with numerous extras to handle demanding tasks, including reinforced suspension, improved shock absorbers, and, of course, various police-specific features such as emergency lights, sirens, and central locking for the rear seat. The trunk was equipped with various equipment, including bicycle racks, and a locking fuel cap was included to prevent potential sabotage.

From 1966, the front bench seats were replaced with separate seats sourced from the Saab Monte Carlo, and later in the 1970s, seats from the Saab 99 were used. Between 1966 and 1974, Swedish police acquired 1,200 Valiants. However, after this era, American patrol cars were no longer purchased for regular use in Sweden, being replaced by specialized vehicles, minibuses, and vans.
