A very good starting point for a restoration where the buyer sets the level themselves.

"A car puzzle with great potential."

Description

The car was purchased by the previous owner in the mid-1980s and was in fairly decent condition at the time. The plan was to perform a complete restoration, so the car was fully disassembled to start from scratch. Work such as sandblasting the body with fenders, the frame, welding beams, repairing the rear wheel arches, and creating a new recess for tools in the trunk lid was carried out. Brown leather for the front seats was acquired, and both seat cushions were refurbished with new leather. Additional leather for a backrest for one front seat is included. The rest of the leather interior is deemed usable by the owner. It has been cleaned and treated with leather conditioner. All the wood has been varnished, but it is too light; it should be stained mahogany. After this work was done, the project stalled, and the car remained untouched until the current owner purchased it from the estate.

At that point, the car was completely disassembled. The seller reassembled it to ensure that the essential parts were present. Some parts are in good condition, such as the front fenders, while others require significant work, such as both doors, which need new bottoms and repairs to the door panels. The doors hang poorly at the front edges and will require precise adjustments. The floor has been partially repaired and is partially in good original condition, but some work is needed under the rear seat. The wheel arches have been repaired, both well and poorly, and some work will need to be redone. The trunk floor is in okay condition but is loosely placed. The drivetrain with the engine has been reassembled with a block stamped 1954. However, everything is in original configuration and correct. Small details like the central lubrication system and brake system have been installed by the owner and are complete for restoration. The dashboard is correct, with instruments, buttons, and controls. The convertible top frame is complete and functional, but there is no headliner, insulation mat, or outer top material. Rear floor mats are missing, as are front rubber mats.

Items missing include a chrome strip for the front of the convertible top, a brown leather strap, the original interior rearview mirror, the rear window, tools, hubcaps, as well as rubber seals, boots, and gaskets. The wiring harness is entirely missing but can be purchased new from Carel in Storvreta.

The car was originally dark red with a brown leather interior and a black convertible top. The original chassis plate exists but is not mounted.

Facts about the model

The 170 model was produced between 1949 and 1955, with a total of 70,285 units across all versions. Of these, the 170 S B-Cabriolet was manufactured in 1,603 units during the years 1949–1951. Philipssons imported 191 of these, of which 25–30 remain today, and no more than half of them are still in use.

Mercedes-Benz's first post-war design, the Type 170 S, was a more luxurious development of the W136 theme. The chassis featured a new front suspension with double wishbones and coil springs, as well as a larger engine. The bodywork was new but far from modern, as it displayed clear influences from the pre-war W153 230 model. The car was produced as a limousine and in two open versions (A - two-seater, B - four-seater). Despite the differences, the first version of the 170 S retained the internal code W136.
