Volvo PV 544 F B20 — 1965

A Volvo PV modified according to 1980s styling ideals. It remains in solid original condition but requires a start-up service and an enthusiast to refine and improve the bodywork and interior.

"A slightly weathered trip down memory lane. This is exactly how we wanted a PV to look when I was young."

Description

A previous owner seems to have followed a recipe passed around by 18-year-olds in the early 1980s. Step one: Find a late-model Volvo PV 544. Remove the bumpers, install wide steel wheels, and fit a sports steering wheel with a leather-clad rim, commonly known as a “leather donut.”

Step two: Boost the engine’s power. Either tune the existing B18 engine or swap it for a B20. In this case, it’s a B20 with a single SU carburetor. Adding a “performance muffler” was almost mandatory, if only for the improved sound.

With these upgrades complete, step three was to ensure that the added horsepower could reach the road by equipping the car with a locking differential. It’s unclear whether this PV is fitted with a limited-slip or locking diff. A classic trick was to install front disc brakes from a Volvo Amazon, which has also been done on this PV.

For better comfort, the car was upgraded with a four-speed manual transmission with overdrive to reduce engine RPMs. For sportier shifting, the gear linkage was modified to use a short gear stick instead of the original long lever.

Finally, the original seats were replaced with more modern ones for improved safety and comfort. The stock instruments were swapped out and complemented with round gauges for speed, RPM, oil pressure, and temperature, sourced from Volvo’s motorsport division.

On these cars, the odometer resets at 100,000 km, so the true mileage of this PV is uncertain, especially since the instrument cluster has been replaced.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

We haven’t driven it over a long distance due to slippery road conditions, but the engine and drivetrain run well. The overdrive also works. However, the front left disc brake sticks slightly. Aside from an initial service, the partially custom-wired electrical system needs to be tidied up and functionally tested.

  • Interior condition:

Since the car has been stationary for many years, the floor mats should be replaced as they have suffered from temperature fluctuations and moisture, as have the door panels. The partially creative wiring should also be inspected and organized. For the overall condition, see the photos. The radio has not been tested for functionality.

  • Exterior condition:

The paintwork is in poor condition, likely dating back to the 1980s when the car was restored. Structurally, the car is solid, but there are primarily superficial rust damages—please refer to the photos for specifics. The bumpers are missing, and one taillight as well as a front position light are not working. The auxiliary lights also require inspection to ensure proper functionality.

  • General condition:

This is fundamentally a good car, but a comprehensive review of the entire vehicle, both mechanically and cosmetically, is recommended before putting it into regular use. There are paint and rust issues, but the structural foundation appears to be in good condition. We have not lifted the car for a full inspection but have not noticed anything unexpected for a vehicle of this kind.

Due to the limited amount of driving, not all functions and instruments could be thoroughly tested. The car should be viewed as a fun, rolling restoration project.

Facts about the model

The Volvo PV 544 was manufactured between 1958 and 1966. It was a significant update to the somewhat outdated 444, introducing a new model designation. The 544 featured larger taillights and a more modern interior. Initially, it was powered by a 1.6-liter engine (B16) but received the renowned B18 engine, delivering 75 horsepower, for the 1961/62 model year.

The Volvo PV achieved great success in motorsport, both on the track and in rallying, locally and internationally. One of the more famous drivers was Tom Trana, who competed in rallies with the Volvo PV.
