"At the time of photography, the car was driven approximately 400 meters. According to information provided, the engine and gearbox performed well.

It now requires a timing belt replacement, a service, and an inspection before it can be returned to the road. A thorough interior and exterior detailing would further enhance the car’s overall presentation."

Description

Despite having covered over 200,000 km, the car is in surprisingly good condition — likely thanks to having remained in the same family since 1998.

The first owner was a gentleman named Egon, who purchased the car new from the dealer in Piteå. Nine years later, he traded it in at the same dealership for a new car. At the same time, a young man was dreaming of owning a red Celica Liftback. His name was Petter. Having just turned 21, he spotted the car at the dealership, managed to gather enough money for the down payment, and bought it.

Petter has told us that, in youthful enthusiasm, he painted some interior details red. Considering that the car has remained within the family ever since, we are happy to forgive that.

According to the vehicle register, the car has had five registered owners. In reality, it has only been used by the first owner and Petter’s family. Apart from a few years when Petter lived in Stockholm and kept the car in a carport, it has been stored in a garage when not in use. While in Stockholm, Petter had the car rust-proofed with Dinitrol. A few years later, he moved back to northern Sweden and brought the car home again.

Even after purchasing a more modern vehicle, he kept the Toyota — after all, it had been his dream car in his youth. Since 2016, it has been off the road and stored in a garage, and he now feels ready to let it go.

The odometer shows 226,000 km, and the owner guarantees this to be accurate. The car comes with the owner’s manual, service book, and the original spare wheel and jack.

This is a remote auction. The photographs were taken by an independent photographer with a strong automotive interest, and all information regarding the car and its technical condition has been provided by the owner. BWA has therefore not physically inspected the vehicle on site.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

Equipped with a transversely mounted inline four-cylinder engine. The engine features dual overhead camshafts and 16-valve technology. With a stated output of 140 hp, period advertising claimed 0–100 km/h in 8.8 seconds.

Front-wheel drive with a five-speed manual gearbox. The car starts easily and the engine runs well. However, as it has been off the road for a long time — and the most recent timing belt replacement was carried out 24 years ago — it will require a full service, a brake inspection, and a new timing belt before being put back into use.

  • Interior condition:

Nice interior overall. There is some wear on the driver’s seat backrest, but aside from that it looks very good.

The red details were painted by the current owner in 1998. At the time of photography, the car was taken straight out of the garage. The sharp-eyed viewer will notice that the interior is dusty and would benefit from a thorough cleaning.

  • Exterior condition:

According to information provided, the car retains its original paint. There is a repair on the left sill that has been touched up; to achieve a really nice finish, the left sill should ideally be repainted.

There are also rust bubbles on the sunroof, which is common for this model. The tires are starting to age, and replacement is recommended.

Otherwise, the car is unusually well preserved.

  • General condition:

Despite some signs of normal wear and use, this is a perfect starting point for someone who wants to bring a fine Celica back to top condition. This could truly become a gem. Alternatively, one could simply service and inspect the car and enjoy it as it is.

With approximately 90 remaining examples of the 1989 model year in Sweden, you’re unlikely to encounter many others on the road — that much is certain.

Owner's comment

I was 21 years old when I managed to scrape together enough money to buy my dream car. The red Celica had been purchased new in Piteå in 1989 by an older gentleman named Egon. In 1998, he traded it in for a new car. I then bought it from the dealership. It has since spent many years stored in my garage. Now, I’m ready to let it move on to the next car enthusiast.

Facts about the model

This was the fourth generation of the Celica, also known as the T16. It was produced between 1985 and 1989.
