"A historically interesting car from a time when rally cars differed very little from everyday road cars.

The brakes require an inspection, and a full service is recommended after its long period of storage. The engine and gearbox function well. The seats are mounted low, giving a distinct go-kart-like driving feel.

The car was last inspected in 1994 and will need to undergo a new vehicle inspection before it can be returned to the road."

Description

The car was built by a rally driver named Rolf, who lived in Lekeryd, Jönköping County. We have been in contact with his brother Bengt, who explains that he frequently served as Rolf’s co-driver during the 1970s and early 1980s. They competed for Norrahammars Motorklubb and took part in local rallies in the Småland region.

After Rolf stopped competing with the car, it was used less frequently. By the mid-1990s, it was taken off the road and only brought out occasionally to be warmed up. Its last inspection was carried out in 1994, and since then it has remained unused.

Rolf passed away in 2024, and the car was sold by his estate. The current owner, who has a background in rally driving, acquired the car to preserve it in his collection. He is now letting it go, hoping that it will once again be used as intended. The odometer shows 161,540 km. The total mileage is unknown.

The car is registered as a 1971 model year but features the exterior attributes of later model years. According to information provided, it was necessary to fit the newer bumpers in order to run twin carburetors in Group B (Standard B) specification.

There is only one key for the ignition. The function of the door locks is uncertain. A spare wheel and jack are included. No competition logbook or similar documentation has been preserved.

The following entries are recorded in the vehicle register:
DISPENS: F40A Emissions control SNV 4922-79
T20F Rear seat may not be used for passenger transport
T71E Roll cage installed

From the expert Alf Thuresson, we have received the following information about the limited-slip differential:

This limited-slip differential (diff lock) is called the R-lock and was invented by Ingemar Andersson and Göran Wall in Rolfstorp in the 1970s. It works in such a way that the inner disc is connected to the differential housing and the outer disc to the driveshaft, with a friction plate (clutch plate) positioned between them.

This means they rotate at the same speed when driving straight ahead, and at different speeds when cornering or when one wheel is spinning. By tightening the nuts, you adjust the braking force of the differential. This was a major advantage compared to other limited-slip differentials, where the differential had to be dismantled to adjust the preload. Especially on front-wheel-drive cars, this involved a great deal of work.

The R-lock was manufactured for many makes, but by far the largest brand was SAAB. Ingemar Andersson competed in rally for many years with a SAAB V4 in Standard B class and later moved on to Folkrace, where he became a major star. His inventiveness led to many rule changes — among other things, a rule requiring the car to have four wheels after he removed the rear axle and installed a small wheel in the center at the rear. He won everything there was to win.

Göran Wall also competed successfully in Folkrace for many years.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

V4 engine fitted with a Solex twin-barrel carburetor. Equipped with a separate oil cooler and a heavier-duty Group B exhaust system.

There is a type of limited-slip device mounted on the left side of the gearbox, though we are not entirely certain of its origin — see photo.

There is a minor exhaust leak at the manifold. The clutch engagement point is somewhat high, but nothing we consider problematic.

  • Interior condition

Rally-style interior. The headliner is intact and in good condition. Fitted with older bucket-style rally seats and four-point harnesses. Both the seats and harnesses lack markings and are of unknown origin. The car’s original three-point seatbelts remain installed, as four-point harnesses are not approved for use on public roads. Equipped with a roll cage.

Apart from the door panels and headliner, all sound insulation has been removed from the cabin. The rear seat is missing and may not be used according to the vehicle registration.

In short: the interior is strictly business.

  • Exterior condition

Straight and solid body with good panel gaps between doors, fenders, and side panels. There are a few minor dents and scratches, but nothing major. The hood is opened from the outside via a lever through the front grille.

The underside of the body was previously stripped and repainted. After many years of stationary storage, the paint has flaked in places and surface rust has developed underneath — see photos.

External details such as the bumpers, indicators, and rear spoiler are from a later model year. The car is equipped with a heavy-duty steel skid plate. The tires are of older vintage with a rally tread pattern.

  • General condition

Saab 96 with rally heritage. Shows normal wear for an old rally car. We believe it can be improved with relatively simple measures. It can be inspected and approved for road use, and enjoyed as a cool everyday driver.

Owner's comment

I bought the car because it was great fun to drive — it felt very genuine and unspoiled. The plan was to keep it for nostalgia. At the same time, it’s a shame for it to just sit unused. Right now, I don’t have the time to enjoy it, so it would be better for it to go to an enthusiast who will actually use and appreciate the car.

Facts about the model

Standard B was a national rally class in Sweden, primarily active during the mid- and late 1970s (introduced around 1974 and active until approximately 1981). It was a class for largely production-based cars with limited tuning, making it an entry-level alternative compared to more expensive categories.

During the 1970s, Standard B was one of the most popular national rally classes in Sweden, governed by the Swedish Automobile Sports Federation (SBF). It was intended as an affordable option positioned between Standard A and the more liberal Special Class.

In simple terms, engines in both Standard A and Standard B were “blueprinted,” meaning they had to remain within the factory-specified minimum and maximum tolerances. For the Saab 96 V4, only single carburetors (FoMoCo or Solex) were permitted in the early years of the class. Later, the twin-barrel Solex carburetor — fitted as standard on certain models such as the V4 Super — was allowed. However, this also required the installation of the larger rubber-clad bumpers.

Important distinction

It is important not to confuse the Swedish national class Standard B with the international and legendary Group B (1982–1986), which consisted of extremely powerful four-wheel-drive rally cars. Standard B was the exact opposite — a class for essentially unmodified production cars.

Standard A: An older class, now discontinued, with a weight-to-power ratio of 10 kg per horsepower. Saab 99 competed in Standard A.

Standard B: An older class, now discontinued, with a weight-to-power ratio of 15 kg per horsepower. Saab 96 competed in Standard B.

Modern equivalent

If you wish to compete today under similar historical principles, the relevant regulations can be found under Historic Motorsport (Appendix K) with the Swedish Automobile Sports Federation.

Note: There is currently no rally class in which an old Standard B rally car can compete without modification.

About Norrahammars Motorklubb

The club was founded as early as 1930. During the 1970s, rally interest was at its peak, and competitions could see 15–20 rally crews from NMK participating. The club still exists today and has around 600 members. Current activities focus primarily on enduro and motocross, although there remains strong interest in both trial and rally.
