"I may be biased, as I love the sound of two-stroke engines, but this car had me smiling and laughing while filming and driving. It sounds fantastic, thanks to its tuned engine and side-mounted exhaust—any Saab enthusiast would love to own and drive this gem."

Description

The owner and his family boast a rich history and deep expertise with Saab dating back to the 1960s, when his father was a leading engineer heavily involved in design and development. The car's most distinctive feature is its engine—a one-of-a-kind racing engine from Saab’s racing division that has seen competitive use. It even ran in a vintage rally in the late '90s (the Dalsrands Rally). Built by Saab’s racing division, the engine features Lancia carburetors and a separate oil pump, was run with mixed lubrication, and comes with a race exhaust system. It was even raced by Saab at the Nürburgring.

The owner fully renovated the car in the late-1990s—stripping it down to its bare metal, replacing the bonnet and outer door skin, mounting kick plates on the sills, performing welding work, and completely repainting it. The renovation was completed with a Saab factory engine side-mounted exhaust. Primarily driven locally over the past 25+ years, the car even took part in protests against GM before Saab’s eventual bankruptcy, and it is well-known among Saab enthusiasts around Trollhättan.

Everything about the car is pretty standard, except for the engine, which requires a few extra higher revs when changing gears and a slightly firmer clutch and 4-speed transmission with Saab Sport brakes—front disc brakes and rear drum brakes. Although the car is currently uninspected, the owner will deliver it with a new, final inspection—ensuring you won’t need to worry about another one.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

The engine fires up immediately and runs very smoothly and evenly, sounding awesome at high revs. Road handling is stable and firm, with solid brakes. As mentioned, you'll need to rev a bit higher when pulling off due to the firmer fitted clutch. The engine bay and boot space are clean and tidy, and it comes with good wheels and tires. Additionally, the car has been serviced by the owner and will be delivered with a new and final inspection. 4-speed transmission with Saab Sport brakes—front disc brakes and rear drum brakes.

  • Interior condition:

The interior is standard yet nicely maintained and tidy, with no damage apart from a small crack on the dashboard pad and a loose pocket on the passenger door card (see pictures). The seats, headliner, dashboard, and rubber carpets are all in great condition, and it features a sporty four-bolt wooden steering wheel.

  • Exterior condition:

The car presents very well, with straight and undamaged bodywork—apart from a small 10 cm dent under the rear right brake light. There are no major rust issues, only a few minor blisters on the front valance. The underbody is tidy with a few surface rust spots that could be remedied with a wire brush to remove the old sealant and apply a new one for lasting protection. The paintwork is bright and clean, with some scuffing on the edges of the rear wings and a few light scratches on the lower left wing that can be easily polished out. The chrome accents are bright, although the bumper shows some oxidation in places.

  • General condition:

Every Saab enthusiast needs this car. It sounds amazing, and the engine is a true piece of Saab history. It turns heads from about 300 meters away, so you'll never go unnoticed when driving it.
