"I'm always surprised and impressed by these 1930's Rolls Royces; they are a true work of art and hard to find. The car will need a full mechanical review since it hasn't been started for 40+ years. I would recommend onsite viewing. The bodywork is amazingly solid with no rust issues."

Description

Tord drove the car to Sweden back in the summer of 1975 and registered it in the fall. Since then, the car was used sporadically for ceremonial occasions during the summers until the early nineties, when it underwent a comprehensive technical renovation. The work was carried out by the renowned Helgesson at Nissafors Motor Renovations in Anderstorp. The engine was renovated with a reworked crankshaft and new bearings, camshaft, clutch, and fuel system. There was also a plan to lift off the aluminum body and renovate the chassis, but it was found to be in very good condition, both in beams, floors, and link arms. Instead, all vital bushings and wear parts in the chassis and brakes were replaced. After this, the car was put away in the father's collections and was taken out for excursions in the neighborhood for several summers. The car was last driven in 2018, and Tord has stated that it has always started easily and been pleasant to drive. Before the new inspection regulations came into effect on April 20, 2018, cars of model year before 1951 were exempt from inspection by virtue of their age, and consequently, this one was too, but a buyer needs to invest in a technical check and service. Currently, the water pump and magneto ignition are dismantled.

The body is entirely handmade in aluminum by the Barker coach building firm in London. Barkers has origins dating back to the 18th century. They were suppliers to the English royal household, including during the time of Queen Victoria. They manufactured horse-drawn vehicles with bodies of various designs at that time. The company went into liquidation in 1939.

The car features dual ignition and fuel systems. The stiffness of the suspension is adjusted according to road conditions with a lever on the steering wheel. The car is also equipped with centralized lubrication. The engine is an inline 6-cylinder with overhead valves, 7.7 liters, and is described by the factory as "sufficient for the carriage's needs."

The car comes from the Sandahls collection, which Bilweb Auctions AB will sell in early spring under four different themes: first, some of the family's popular workhorses, primarily Mercedes, Volkswagen, and a wildcard, then half a dozen exclusive Rolls-Royce and Jaguars, followed by a selection of early Ford cars and a Chevrolet from the infancy of motoring. Finally, there will be nine different award-winning and representative full-size American cars from 1959, the year when tailfins were at their largest.

Sandahls is now one of Sweden's largest family-owned transport conglomerates. The company was founded in Värnamo in 1949. Previous generations have collected around 40 cars under various themes in their private museum for many years. Bilweb Auctions AB has now been tasked with the honor of selling these in four rounds in February and March this year.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition:

This car was not started or tested by BWA. Water pump and magneto ignition are dismantled but included (see pictures), Also fuel line is disconnected. Various spare parts are included in the boot (see pictures). The car will require a full technical review and service. The wheels are in great condition, with good older tires.

  • Interior condition:

The interior is remarkable, considering it's nearly 100 years old, and is in a nice and complete condition. The front seats are made of typical leather for the driver, while the rear seats are plush and include an extra fold-out seat. In the front, the leather front seats and door cards are in good condition, although the window winders are missing on both sides. The carpet is worn, but the wooden trim is very nice, and the dashboard and gauges are in good condition. In the rear, the plush seat is in good condition, along with the wooden trim and headliner. The floor carpet is slightly worn but still ok, and there is also a nice sliding dividing window

  • Exterior condition:

This car has no rust issues, boasting a super solid bodywork and an extremely nice underbody. The bodywork is mostly straight, apart from the dent and scuff on the left wings and the scuff on the right lower wing, which occurred when driving into the museum years ago. The paintwork is bright and clean, featuring a deep dark blue color with nice brass trim on the doors, and only minor marks and scratches in place. The car has been repainted sometime in the past. The chromework all around is in great and shiny condition.

  • General condition:

This car is ideal for a Rolls Royce enthusiast, especially with the right knowledge of these cars. It will need a proper review and assessment of the mechanical condition, but cosmetic flaws are easily fixed. It's amazing how solid the car's condition is.

Facts about the model

Firman gick i konkurs 1939.
